i'm a terrible person.. i havent had small kids around for awhile and the other day a couple of kids were over , 6 and 5 yrs old and the grown ups were watching the tsunami coverage on bbc. well, forgetting that bbc doesnt edit out stuff as much as american news , they showed dead children. so we had to spend a few minutes discussing this with the kids. they had questions like " did it hurt to die" " does it still hurt to lay there on the ground" " couldnt their mommy have saved them?"

they seemed satisfied with our answers but still. a reminder .. USE caution when watching coverage with kids around!

I cant bring myself around to letting my kids see this news coverage, but they are only 8 & 9 yrs old. Its bad enough watching it as an adult. I will let them know that we are all helping other people who are in desperate need but I wont let them see the pictures. I do understand that some would disagree with this and I respect their views.

yes, I have experience with this. the first day, my child saw pretty much what I did, but then the pictures of bodies started coming in and I knew it was too much for her. She saw, by accident, a pile of children laying there and she said "Are they hurt, mama?" and I said "Yes, honey, they're hurt." and changed the channel.

She immediately asked how she could send the money in her bank to them to help them.

After that, hubby and I decided that we didn't want to overwhelm her so she doesn't watch the coverage any more. She is aware that many many people died, she is also aware that she is very fortunate because someone she knows who was there was spared (can't go into too much detail on the 'net on that) but I know that she wanted to know when, and how, we were going to do all we could to help. So I told her about how we planned to donate.

Your point is very important; children should know what is going on in the world around them but even grown adults are barely able to tolerate images of this tragedy (myself included) and so you have to be careful what your kids see.

    thanks for the reminder!

I don't watch much news around my kids!

I know they are small still young ages 1 and almost 3. I still believe there are things children should not see so I wait until they go to bed. I just don't want to answer things they are not ready to ask and understand!

the 9/11 coverage was so bad because it was close to home but it was not as gruesome and graphic as the coverage of the tsunami. i've had to turn off some of the tsunami coverage because it was so hard to see myself.

i wonder if schools are organizing how to talk to kids when they return to school next week.
