I came across something interesting today. It seems that some people hold that Abraham came from India. Here is some of what is put forth as evidence. There?s much more.

Quote from Gene Matlock BA MA Who Was Abraham

Abraham is one of the oldest Semitic prophets. His name is supposed to be derived from the two Semitic words ?Ab? meaning ?Father? and ?Raam/Raham? meaning ?of the exalted.? In the book of Genesis, Abraham simply means ?Multitude.?
The root of Brahma is ?Brah? which means - ?to grow or multiply in number.? In addition Lord Brahma, the Creator God of Hinduism is said to be the ?Father of all Men and Exalted of all the Gods?, for it is from him that all beings were generated. Thus again we come to the meaning ?Exalted Father.? This is another clear indicator that Abraham is linked the Hindu deity Brahma.
Equating the Hindu Brahma and Saraswathi with the Biblical Abraham and Sarai is easily attainable. It must be mentioned in this respect that while Saraswathi is said to be the daughter of Brahma in accordance with the Indian tradition, her Biblical counterpart, Sarai, has been described as the sister of Abraham.
There are many striking similarities between the Hindu god Brahma and his daughter/consort/wife Saraswathi, as compared with the Jewish Abraham and his sister/wife Sarai that seem more than mere coincidences.
Abraham and Sarah (Sarai) can easily refer to the Indian version of Brahma and Saraswathi. This indicates that this is an abridgement of some of the versions in the Indian Puranas, which is an easy jump to make logically as many Indian epics existed long before the Bible was written.

Has anyone done any real hardcore research on this? Does anyone here know Sanskrit to prove or disprove any of these claims? I cant find anything exposing this Matlock character as a fruit.

It's BS. The Sanskrit word brahman- "priest" actually derives from Proto-Indo-European *bhlaghmen "priest," from which Latin flamen "priest of a particular deity" was also derived (whence the English word flamen).

I was going to say that a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. But, the vedic abraham inventor doesn't have even a little, just an active imagination.

Ya, you will find a lot of supposed linguistic connections between bible names and hinduism. I will defer to Leolaia on all such matters. However the essential myth is similar. Abraham was a literary creation to create a sense of antiquity and providence to a tribe whose heritage was not much unlike their neighbors. I would say that a remote possibilty exists that some Hittite connections influenced the Abraham stories but not that they simply borrowed and only clumsily changed the details and spelling.
