I have been thinking about this for a while and wanted to get some of your thoughts.
How long after you were appointed an elder did it start to dawn on you that this was not the "truth"?
Was being an elder a catalyst to that realization at all?

I know, I know, not an elder, but just speaking from my experience (elder's wife for 30 years in the borg). No, it was not being an elder that woke us up. But accumulating all the harshness over the years did make me think about what was really important in life. And I think it is how we treat others. Especially the ones down.
The thing that sealed it for me was reading CoC. It summarrized all the doubts I had and it helped that Ray had been a GB member. He was very honest in his writings.
I'm sure there will be plenty of elders and xelders that will comment on your topic. Be patient. They'll come.

Back in November our bible reading was Deut 14-18. I read 18:20-22 describing how to determine a false prophet. Then I did some research in the publications index, I was appalled by the twisting of that scripture. g81 8/8 16-20.
Then the very next week a visiting brother gave a public talk and he referred to 1975. He said ?If someone tells you we didn?t really believe 1975 was going to bring Armageddon, don?t believe them. We all believed 1975 was going to be the end.? I then decided to look in to what they actually printed about 1975 and found that Deut 18:20-22 applies to Jehovah?s Witnesses in everyway. The generation, 1925, abuse, legalist injuctions against things not mentioned in the bible, 607 BC, Demonic Russell, Demonic Rutherford. It never stops.
This started a snowball of discovery that still hasn?t ended.

Right from the platform. His point was, Yes we believed that 1975 would be the end but that it shouldnt have wreaked anyones faith. He didnt realize I was struggling with the whole false prophecy thing as I sat there listening to him.
None of the other appointed men thought anything bad about what he said.
This brother is one of the most respected men in our circuit, maybe even our area.
