Buying houses, building houses - where's the URGENCY of the times?

Recently while at a witness gathering, I noticed that many "young ones" in their twenties and thirties are talking about buying or building a home. Buying or building a home is one of the most expensive commitments you could ever make.

In the USA, an average mortgage lasts 30 years.

In light of all the advice that the FDS have given, regarding using our "remaining time in this system of things wisely", I really

don't see or feel an urgency from these friends about the imminence of Armaggedon.

And these ones aren't necessarily doing badly spiritually - they go to the meetings, answer up and some of the brothers are servants.

But you never, EVER hear about the "new system" or "Armaggedon" in their conversations - even when at the Kingdom Hall.

It's like when the meeting is over, or they're at a gathering, part of their program shuts off and the everyday affairs and cares of this world become their subject - movies, restaurants, homes, cars etc.

It's been my observation that this "urgency" we are all supposed to have only exists at the Kingdom Hall - if that, and that

most dubs blissfully get on with their lives...

which should be disturbing to the Society -

after all, building a home or buying one could hardly be construed as simplifying ones life can it?

It has been like that for decades. I always found it weird: we were learning so much about the urgency of the times in the KH and at the same time people NEVER talked about anything "theocratic" or about the end's proximity.

They simply don't care. It's perfunctory service - it doesn't make any real impact in most of them.

Why would any knowing person treat the times as "urgent".

After crapping on for generations about the "Last Days" - and being wrong every time about everything - the whole WTS Last Days Theme has worn thin. (And no wonder!)

As others have commented, for those that remain, it would have to be no more than a Social Club.

I am still an active witness and in my congregation nobody sets around talking about how close we are to the end. I am 29 and most of the younger group of witnesses that I know pretty much do what they think will get them salvation=go to meetings, go in service and after that they live a normal life. We are constantly being told at the meetings and assemblies about the dangers of materialism. The circuit overseer said that sadly most witnesses would not make it. They know that they are losing the younger ones and thats why they counsel so much to the younger crowd. After all we are the Elders, Circuit overseers of the future and they are losing us.

    Panic Attack,

Did the CO mean that most young witnesses would not make it through to the new system?

If so, then it's their own fault for not providing enough youth-friendly activities in the organization.

    All the Benefits
The Watchtower Society and its members enjoy all the benefits that being a part of an organized consumer society brings. The members are employed by the system and in some cases live on social security payments. The Society utilises the most efficient literature production and transportation systems the capitalist world has developed.
Jehovah's Witnesses benefit daily from the efficient running of schools, food production and emergency services. They are at the forefront in using law courts and governmental law to support their freedom and uphold their human rights. Not only do they benefit from medical advances, but expect preferential treatment to enable operations and organ transplants without blood transfusion. Despite benefiting from the efforts of professional people, they strongly discourage their own members from pursuing higher education.
Giving to charity is discouraged. All donations are expected to go to the Society, as this is considered the most worthy cause. They quote Jesus words ?You will always have the poor,? as good reason for not giving to the under-privileged. All such assistance is reserved for those in their ?nation.?
They are no part of the world, in as much as they will not vote or help to organize local government. They are encouraged to avoid training for professional positions and, if possible, full-time work. In terms of receiving the benefits that come from the efforts of others who are not standing back waiting for the world system to end, so that they can inherit the world, they are very much a part of the world.

I know when I was growing up as a teenager it was drilled into my head that Armeggedon was just around the corner. That was between the years 1985 - 1993. I left around 1994. Anyways, that was ALL THE TALK.... so I guess things have calmed down now that 1994 came and went.
