Well, it finally happened. My brother was talking to me and he told me his wife had been put on reproof (not sure if it was public or private). Her mother caught her smoking and reported her to the elders. I'm hoping this sets back my niece from getting baptized. She's only 12 years old.

Man, I hope your niece gets set back by it as well Nos. I know that what they are going through is a horrible thing to go through but baptism is such a step you can't go back on...

Maybe it'll be a wake up call for everybody (or hope it will be)....

The difference between private and public reproof is how many people are aware.

Of all the things to get in trouble over, smoking is not the one I'd pick. Go for broke and question authority! Ask, "Hey! Where is that Armageddon anyway? The one I did not go to college because of? The one I pioneered for 5 long years for no pay, while struggling with a full time job? Or best of all, how about the witness husband, who never worked and slept around on me? I married as per the organization required? In the Lord, right?

I'm so sorry to hear about it, Nos. Maybe this board could provide some healing to her soul as well as opening her eyes

    Hi Nos

Yes, that would be a real good thing.

I swear this reminds me of the families of the early Christains which were encouraged to 'report' those who had converted to Christainity so they could be dragged out in public and murdered. Okay, extreme example, I know. But, that's my take on it and we know it is exactly this mindset that was responsible for turning family members in to the authority figures in the first century, and Nazi Germany as well. Argh!

Matthew 15:10 Jesus called the crowd to him and said, ?Listen and understand. 11 What goes into a man's mouth does not make him ?unclean,? but what comes out of his mouth, that is what makes him ?unclean.? ?
Matthew 15:17-19 ?Don't you see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body? 18 But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these make a man ?unclean.? 19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.

Just goes to show you once more - from the scriptures - that the JW's are placing their efforts and emphasis on the wrong things. They can't see the forest for the trees so to speak - so set on rules and control that they miss the big picture. Sure - smoking is bad for you and you shouldn't do it because you might die from it. But it's not what condemns you - straight from Jesus own words - it is not what we put in our mouth (whether it's cigarettes or birthday cake), it is our heart condition that is of the most importance. Their emphasis should be on cultivating a clean heart.

Oh c'mon Dawn! Cultivating a clean heart doesn't give anyone the great opportunity of feeling holier-than-thou!
