Lawyers: BTK suspect says he's depressed

Out of touch with family, Rader complains of sleepless nights

WICHITA, Kansas (AP) -- The man accused of being the BTK serial killer has complained about depression and asked about his family, who have not talked to him since he entered prison, his lawyers say.

Dennis Rader, 60, is charged with 10 counts of first-degree murder in deaths that have haunted Wichita since 1974, when investigators began looking for a man who called himself the "Bind, Torture, Kill" strangler and taunted police with letters and packages sent to media outlets.

In an interview with Time magazine, Rader's public defenders would not confirm reports that he has confessed to six of the 10 killings in which he is accused.

Along with growing depression, he has complained about sleepless nights, the lawyers said.

They said he spends some of his time taking notes and reading a detective novel.

"He has so far been easy to deal with," attorney Sarah McKinnon told Time. "At times he seems weary. But I have seen him smile."

The lawyers have not returned repeated phone calls from The Associated Press since they were appointed to represent him.

They spend as much as five hours a day with Rader at the Sedgwick County jail, where he is being held in lieu of $10 million bail.

Rader asks repeatedly about his wife and children, who haven't spoken to him since his arrest on February 25 and are believed to be in seclusion outside Kansas.

Attorney Steve Osburn said Rader's public defenders will consider asking for a change of venue for his trial.

A preliminary hearing is set for March 15, but the district attorney's office said it expects the hearing to be postponed.

He's depressed, what about the 10 victims family's? Im alot more concerned for them then some a-holes depression after he went out and killed these 10 people. He deserves what he gets. Its like the old saying "you reap what you sow." He deserves much worse then depression and I hope they dont waste tax dollars treating this guys depression, it would be much better spent in other ways, like on the lethal injection that he will probably get. Thats a much better cure for his depression. lol I dont mean to sound mean but he deserves what he gets and to be a baby over it after is ridiculous. He should face his consequences and be a man not a snivelling self sorry idiot. "If you cant do the time, dont do the crime"

He's depressed, good. I hear they have good shrinks in prison. Hell, he'll have all the time in the world to be with them.

Unless like Scully insinuated, they're going to put him down.

A lot of serial killers say things like that. They always turn the situation round to feeling sorry for themselves rather than the victims. It just shows how messed up their minds are.

Rather than being mean lethal injection is maybe a release for people like that as I don't think they could ever live a normal life. Put him down I say.

Yea, I heard this on the news last night. I laughed out loud.

Has he even imagined the lifelong depression these families have felt for so long that HE caused after murdering CHILDREN, FATHERS, SONS, DAUGHTERS and MOTHERS?

Does he even consider that now his wife and kids have to live with this stigma?

    Boo effin' hoo dude.
