  I came across this Web site today: http://www.bruderhof.com/ I've never heard of these people, although their theme reminds me of the Omish. Anyone have experiences to share about them, or know of anyone part of the community? alias

  My mom had a friend who was once part of a Bruderhof community I guess her family is still in but she was encouraged to live outside of the community before actually joining (even though she was raised there). Anyway, she never joined but she was never cut off from her family still in. Whwn I knew her she went back at least once a year to visit family.
  
  I was told it came out during the 1920s after the founder in Germany who had been studying Hutterites found that there were still Hutterite communities in N. America. Most of the members fled Germany while Hitler ruled.
  
  I know that in the US these communities get pretty active in charity and some have actually gotten involved in things like the Mumia Abu Jamal issue and various other peace/justice issues. So they aren't as closed off as the Amish.

  under74, I appreciate your post. I intially found the site doing some research on fostering children's creativity here: http://www.savingchildhood.org/. The Community site reminds me somewhat of Bethel living, but with more emphasis on "family life". alias

  There is a beautiful community right here in Ulster County NY, not far from New Paltz. My husband and I went for one of their tremendous open house/cook-out/concert events last year. WOW! Several members are local doctors and students too. Genuine, loving folks, but I for one CHERISH my individuality!

  Yeah, thanks for the website link. I'm always kind of skeptical when it comes to religious communal type things but I guess from what I know about the Buderhof group I can't say I see too many bad things about them. In fact my mom's old friend told me that the Hutterites (or at least some factions) dissassociated the Buderhofs in the 80s....or maybe it was the 90s because the Buderhof's for the most part wanted their kids to go to public schools, encouraged college, encouraged legal aged kids to live apart from the community before joining, believe in serving the communities they live in or around, they like music and for the most part oppose the death penalty.
