I didn't realize this before. And before reading Crisis of Conscience, I had no idea that this was the decision making process used by the Governing Body.

It's rather ironic that for a group that for decades has so consistently criticized everything about the Catholic church, that they would follow this practice.

Is this common in other churches and/or corporations? Just curious.

If they were being guided by the same "Holy Spirit (Person)", you would think the very first vote would be unanimous.

(What better sign that they are in-fact being guided by "Holy Spirit" than a unanimous vote on every "spiritual" matter?)

Wonder if it's 2/3 of those present for the vote or if it's as Mickey Moused as the Society's 2/3 of those eligible to vote (present or not) .

I just love how they keep everything under wraps as far as the process and what's going on. Like it's some big holy process when it's really just a bunch of elders I mean grown men I mean boys arguing and fighting over who gets to be infallible now .

It's 2/3 of those present. But with the new rules written by JPII in 1996, after about 30 votes, its simple majority rule if the cardinals feel they are deadlocked. Everyone is touting this new rule but it is an option, they can choose to go majority or not.

In addition, the man who receives the votes does NOT have to accept the papacy.

A two thirds vote is quite common in political and commercial situations and some other organizations with large numbers of members and a ruling party.

But these groups usually have the good sense to not claim they are lead by the holy spirit in their decisions. Which makes the whole thing a matter of laughter and disgrace.

Is that why the WT can't change the pedo laws re 2 witness rule, or warning others....they can't get more than 2/3 to say yay

So who make up the 1/3 who say nay?

do you think the average JW knows about the 2/3 vote thing? - sounds democratic doesn't it! Just like those other wicked corrupted earthly governments. LOL

I didn't find out about this 2/3 majority vote business until I had been a JW for many years. My thoughts were the same as what you said, Else.Too many questions begin to pop up as you begin to reason on the whole thing.

I didn't know that the Papal selection required the same vote!!! How ironic!

I learned all about this when I read "Angels and Demons" by Dan Brown (this is pre- Davinci code). Who said fiction isn't useful?

Anyone see Eurotrip??? there is this HILARIOUS scene at the end when the kids wander into the pope section...oh so very VERY disrespectful...but VERY funny...I think even John Paul would forgive them it was that funny...he was a good guy.
