Windows XP: Know how to kill these system tray message ballons?

    Hey All,

One aspect of this new laptop is driving me batty. Every so often, a message balloon pops up out of one of the system tray icons to tell me about some event it thinks I care about. New updates are ready. Wireless networks in range. Coffee's ready. All day long I'm clicking the little X to make them go away, and of course I occassionaly miss the X, click the balloon, and get driven into some application I didn't want to be in.

Is there any way to make these things stop harrassing me? I found a website that listed a registry hack, tried it, it didn't work. Sorry I don't remember what it was now.

    Thanks!

I've killed some of them using the group policy editor. i use it to turn off the windows firewall and security center. (the computer has to be a domain member to turn off the security center this way).

find your start up file.. and remove those things from start up..

i think (not positive) you go to my computer then windows then start up file..

also.. when you start your puter up... you can right click on the update icon and choose exit..and that'll keep it off till you shut down and restart again.

It's the little grey pop up boxes that drive me nuts. In the end I just deleted the messenger service.

    Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\
Create a DWORD value of EnableBalloonTips
Give it a value of 0

    OOPS! My bad!

    Here's the site: http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/997/

It says to go into the registry and set [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\
    Advanced]
    to DWORD=0 (0=disabled, 1=enabled)

In looking this up, I realized that I did it wrong! (Users.. sheesh...)

OK, after having done it right, no balloons so far. One should have come up by now, to warn me that balloons are disabled if nothing else.

    Hope this helps somebody else!

Your computer is demonized and you need to lay in a supply of holy water. If this fails to work, you may need to drop it on it's melon a time or two to shake it to it's senses.

Let me know how that goes for you...

Seriously though, don't know if this is your specific issue, but when I bought my Media Center I had popup thingy's bugging me all the time. I hate being nagged. This worked for me:

    Start,

    control panel,

    system,

    automatic updates

and set your preferences. You can turn off the automatic updates (which were my problem) from there, or choose a frequency for them to run so you don't get behind but they are not popping up day and night. With all the virus and other issues, I wouldn't turn it completely off though. Kinda risky...
