Radio4 (UK). Tonights show is all about 'Jehovah's Witnesses and the blood transfusion issue'.

20:00 Inside the Ethics Committee1/3. Every day, life or death decisions are being made in hospitals all over the country by clinical ethics committees. In this series, Vivienne Parry is joined by a panel of experts including health professionals, religious leaders, philosophers and lawyers.

Each week, a new case is put in front of the ethics committee and they examine personal testimonies from patients, relatives and medical staff. As the panel gradually unravels the evidence, they test the moral foundation of how decisions are made in hospitals every day.

    [Rptd Sat 10.15pm]

Edited : Use the following link to listen to the show live from anywhere (hopefully!) in the world. The show is on at 3pm (only 20 mins!) New York time.

A very interesting debate, you can listen to it here (43 minutes long and you'll need Real Player).

One thing I noticed was that the Elder/HLC member consistently referred to God as "the Almighty" not Jehovah and when quoting from Acts 15:28 he did not use the NWT (the wording was more 'old fashioned' - fornication was rendered as unchastity).

Clearly the Watchtower Society attempts to present itself as more mainstream and less cultish, especially when dealing with health professionals. This is duplicitous and dishonest.

By contrast, the Church of England vicar who was a member of the ethics committee found himself in the paradoxical position of having to represent the interests of Jehovah's Witnesses insofar as making the argument that their conscientious, and competantly arrived at beliefs should be respected. The man was balanced and fair.

I've emailed the info and relevant links to Lee Elder at AJWRB and posted this up at theWatchtower.org

I have just listened to it. It was very interesting. There was one issue I didnt understand, they said it would have been better for him not to have had any treatment rather than just the chemo. The pastor then explained that the JW had to request patial treatment or he wouldnt get into paradise.

I felt this became the main issue.
