    G'day all,

It's been a while since we shared our wine tasting notes. Perhaps this weekend is just the right time!

Our good navy friends have been keeping in touch from all parts of the globe while I was in hospital, phoning from this or that terminal.

Today was the reunion and what better drink to share with good friends than a good red?

    So what did they choose?

    This:

    So our friends brought this:

    COONAWARRA CABERNET SHIRAZ MERLOT 2002

It's from the Jamieson's Run label and the name pays tribute to the pioneering past of South Australia.

    Here's the winemaker's notes:

The original Jamiesons Run was a remote outback sheep station owned by the Jamieson Brothers in the mid

1800’s. Our winery, based in the heart of the famous Coonawarra region was named Jamiesons Run as a tribute to

our pioneering past. Since the early 1950’s we have been crafting wine from Coonawarra fruit and have always been

at the forefront of vineyard development and fine winemaking.

The 2002 Cabernet Shiraz Merlot is dark plummy red with purple hues. Abundant flavours of mulberry, dark plums, cherry and blackberry

fruit are enhanced by the subtle use of American Oak, providing spice and cedar on the nose. This medium bodied wine is smooth and

silky, bursting with berry fruit, chocolate and spice on the finish.

    COONAWARRA CABERNET SHIRAZ MERLOT 2002

    VITICULTURE

This wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, and Merlot. The

fruit was sourced from vineyards in Coonawarra. A cool climate

region that produces some of the best wines in the world. The 2002

vintage was exceptional, producing high quality fruit. Growing vines

on a single wire ensures an optimum balance of fruit and foliage,

and desirable small berries with concentrated fruit flavours.

    VINIFICATION

Following crushing, the fruit was vinified in a combination of rotary

and static stainless steel fermenters for 6 to 8 days. The separate

parcels matured in 30% new American oak for 18 months prior to

    blending.

    CELLARING

Will reward 3 years careful cellaring.

    SUGGESTED FOOD

This easy drinking red is great with a barbeque, sizzling Chinese

    beef or a rich casserole.

    TECHNICAL ANALYSIS

    Harvest Date: March-April 2002

    pH: 3.48

    Acidity: 6.1 g/L

    Alcohol: 14%

    Residual Sugar: 2.31 g/L

This may be available in your local bottle shop/wine outlet. Worth a try, especially to enjoy with friends.

yes, sounds good. But what's the price?

BTW, have you ever stated what you think of the Charles Shaw shiraz?
Charles Shaw (2 Buck Chuck) costs $2.

    What? It does the trick....

    It does the trick

Good grief - "the trick"!!!! That's no good wine, it must be savored, it's no quick trick.

OK, I know what you're saying. It's like when I buy the $10 wine instead of the $5 wine. It's so much better on the tongue...even though the $5 stuff works quicker...

    LOL...ozzie I'm giving you a hard time.

    wow, that sounds wonderful.

The only aussie shiraz I've tried is the "yellowtail" ...............but I'm willing to try something that is recommended.

Thanks Ozzie, hope you are recooperating nicely.

Well, we did the honours over a 1992 Leeuwin Prelude Cab Sav we got about 1995 for $22 - a lot for a wine back then! The storage had been very poor, but the cork had stayed sealed and the wine was in reasonable condition. It was rich with a lot of flavour, but it would have been vinigar soon I think - it wasn't a perfect bottle by any means.

There's an annual concert at the winery in Margaret River that's worth going to - Sting played this year.
