| KAMPALA THE Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI) has arrested an impersonator of CMI boss Col. Nobel Mayombo and conning people including MPs of their money.
Mr Mike Mugarura, a Senior Six leaver from Ntare School in Mbarara, was arrested in Fort Portal last week.
The Joint Anti-terrorism Taskforce (Jat) spokesman, Capt. Joseph Tumusiime, paraded Mugarura before the press yesterday and warned the public against security and State House impersonators.
He said in case of suspicion, the public should call the Police on 999 or hotlines 041-344 908, 041-344 907, 041-344 462, 041-349 460, 041-342 6913 and 041-349 461.
Tumusiime said cases of peddling 'black' dollars are also up. He said about six people had been conned of more than $90, 000 (Shs120 million) in the past two weeks.
Mugarura told the press that he impersonated Col. Mayombo and called the Chief Accountant of the Ministry of Works in Fort Portal, Mr Fred Waiswa, to give "Mayombo's son" (Mugarura) a job.
He said Waiswa secured for him a job as a laboratory attendant.
However, Mugarura left the job after a month and went to Ibanda.
Whenever Waiswa would call to ask about Mugarura's whereabouts, Mugarura would change his voice to sound like Mayombo. He would tell Waiswa that Mugarura had some problems.
But when Waiswa went to Mbarara for a Jehovah's Witness conference, he met Mugurura at the same function. He took him back to Fort Portal and kept him at his home. He also paid him his salary of Shs145,000.
Whenever, Waiswa would call 'Mayombo' to tell him about his 'son', Mugarura, who had put his telephone in vibration, would sneak out to a secret place to answer the call and he would thank him for taking care of his son. |
