This doesn't surprise me. Assuming that it is ok not to put anything in the offering envelopes, the parents whos kids have been kicked out can't claim 'financial manipulation' The priest should have gone and checked out why the folks weren't attending though - as is shown, sometimes there are genuine reasons. (But speaking from personal experience they rarely go searching for those who have disappeared)
I think the good side of this in some ways is that it sorts out the 'genuine' Catholics from the 'superstitious' ones who think that the sacraments are the only ticket required to get into heaven (I don't mean that with any ill intent, sorry if I haven't worded it very well)
Another thing that sometimes happens here (don't know how it is in other countries) is that parents get their children baptised/christened purely to ensure that they can get them into the church schools when they get older (church school education seen as better than other state schools - open to question!). I remember the priest where I used to go being on the front page of the local paper for 'refusing' to baptise a child - all he had done was request that the parents who didn't attend church, go on a 6 week course to learn the 'implications' of bringing up a child in the Catholic church. The parents had refused so he said sorry but...

Who is setting the example of manipulation to whom? WTS or RC?

You need to have some rules. Otherwise, people will do whatever they want.
We have bar codes on our enevelopes, too. By the way, we also have our names and addresses on them, too!
So, would I drop an envelope into the basket without putting money into it? Absolutely not!! That would be stupid.
There are times that I have forgotten my envelope when I went to church. So, I just put money into the basket. How much? At least enough to cover the expenses of maintaining the church.
3 or 4 bucks? What does it hurt?
I don't believe every statement in this article. I think it is biased.
I am not a devout Catholic, but it doesn't matter. If you belong to a church, then you should "support" it.
My wife teaches ccd (Catholic education). She feels bad, when she sees parents drop off their kids for ccd, and never sees the parents in church. This is not right. If you want to bring up your kid in a religious atmosphere, you should participate !!

I agree with you hubert, that was really my point I was trying to get across by posting this article. Either the parents should participate or just forget about it and wait for the kid to make up his/her own mind about whether or not they want to be religious. another point I just thought of, what about the time and effort and expense put into the religious curriculum at these churches? Don't people realize that it costs money to support these programs and make them function as they should?

Exactly, Soledad. I'm glad you posted this article. Do you think the way this article is written, that it sounds biased? Hubert

i pm'd jwshwerm.....?i cant spell.....anyway.. he said a lot of catholic churches offer discounts for the classes to church members.. people join the churches, get the discount then dont ever attend...so i can understand the priest wanting to clear out those because they are taking advantage of the church..could have handled it differently though i think.

The Catholic church is super rich but charity has its limits, at least they do a lot more for the needy than the WTS they pay for missionaries but also do a lot more besides that.
