Husband claims that there are no 'canned responses' taught at the kh. The fact that I partially saw a little sheet of his that did in fact have canned responses to a householders questions & comments makes me think he just considers these suggestions. Isn't part of the meetings on Tues & Thurs specifically geared toward how to talk to non jw's? How can he actually see a sheet of paper with these 'suggestions' and not think others would consider these to be canned responses is beyond me. I know, that's why it's a cult. Some days I still can't get over it. carla

Carla - ask him what the reasoning from the scriptures book is - if not a book of canned responses! Sure you are recommended to adapt the answers into your own words, but it is still canned. And I've also heard that the Kingdom Ministry now has a canned presentation so they can sell the magazines without having to read the mag themselves!

Honesty
Next time see if you can get him to look at a scriptural question in the WatchTower Study article without reading the paragraph and ask him to answer the question scripturally without referring to any WT publications. Then..... watch him squirm and wiggle.

Its called the Reasoning Book. Its a canned response for anything a householder might say.
THey right it off as an Encyclopedia, but when the last time an encyclopedia had "conversation sToppers" in it?

Quotes
I agree with the other responders: the book Reasoning From The Scriptures is a "canned response" training book -- OVER 400 pages long!!!! That is a lot of canned response!
My proof (to offer to your spouse):
pages 9-15 -- "Introductions For Use in the Field Ministry" (i.e. not only are the responses canned, but the introductions are canned too) I believe the monthly "Kingdom Ministry" also has monthly "Introductions" to use with the current "offer"
pages 15-24 -- "How you Might Respond to Potential Converstaion Stoppers"
The remainder of the book, from subject "Abortion" (page15) to subject "World" (page 435) is a concise encylopedia of canned responses on various specific "bible based" topics.
According to the "How to Use" introduction (page 7):
"This publication has not been prepared for the purpose of helping anyone to "win arguments" with people who show no repect for the truth. Rather, it provides valuable information thta is meant to be used in reasoning with individuals who will allow you to do so."
In other words: these canned responses (aka valuable information) are only intended for easily brainwashed people that are dumb enough to accept this garbage unquestioningly. Don't waste your time with anyone who already knows most of this "valuable information" is nonsense. -
Wasanelder Once
When I was pioneering a CO once complimented me for my "Presentations". ( We used to know them as "Sermons" ya'know? The whole "Back Call" before "Return Visit" days?) Anyhoo, he said most all of the publishers simply say, "Big book, Red book, 50cent book, you want it?" I thought that was funny. How about these, sound familiar?
1. "We were in the Neighborhood talking to our neighbors about > _________________________ fill in the line. (Sound Familiar?)
2. "If you could ask God one question, what would it be? > (Hmmmm, worked great.)
3. "Do you think we'll ever see a time when it will be safe for children to play in the street again? (Ironic, aint it?)
I remember when I came to a door with a young person in tow and the people were laughing and making loud and crude comments from inside about us. They were especially rude. WHen the young lady answered the door, I began, "Have you notice we live in times where people seem to care little about the feelings of thier neighbors? Do you think that kind of selfish unkindness is pleasing to God? We are attempting to show interest in our neighbors by bringing them a message of hope." Then I shared the magazines which I think she took out of guilt. So you see, mostly its a canned response, but then again not always!

Carla: the canned responses are true. (I am not JW but married to newly converted :-(
true story.
early in my "discovery" stage, I started asking questions in a certain order that I got from book or internet (can't remember)
"Like how to talk to a JW" ....
You say this / they say that / you then say this / they say that.
sure enough the next line out was "Do you trust your doctor?"
My jaw dropped.
That was the beginning of finding out the TRUTH ABOUT THE TRUTH. for me only.
they saw nothing wrong.
but
I found out soon enough the more I studied, and could finish their CANNED sentences - the more foolish the conversations became.
then off course they all had to STOP as well.
step carefully - avoid the road apples.
