For some reason my email browser will not let me do this. It was the same with my previous computer, leading me to believe it is something to do with aol. I am fairly computer able, but no techie - can someone tell me what I can do on my end to fix this, I have heard of others having the same problem.

    Thank you in advance -

haven't used aol for a few years, but perhaps the attachments are compressed into a .zip or .rar... i know aol used to automatically compress attachments into .zip's, but not sure if that's still the case. what is the file extension...? as in, .jpg, .gif, .zip, .rar? once you know that you will be able to find out what program opens it.

dh - I could not seem to determine what sort of file it was - but I just got one open. What usually happens when I click to open the attachment is that I get a box that contains all the email addresses that it was sent to - in the header - but no actual attachment to see or read. This time I clicked the attachment line again and hit open and it opened a third box with the attached text - maybe this is what I have to do - open the attachment twice -

Anyway thanx - by looking for the type of file it caused me to get one open at least.

you could also try dragging the saved files into notepad... this usually tells you if it is a text based file and will show you all the text... if it isn't, you will just get a stack of code.

also, not sure if you did this function to check file types, but if you do this, you will see the extension, if it has one...

go to... Tools > Folder Options > View > (make sure the tab for 'hide extensions for known file types' is unchecked) - this will show you the file extension of all the files on your system.

it could be that the attachment is just the email in aol format (with rich text enhancements), and when you receieve you get the raw text, and the rich version as an attachment... i get that sometimes when people send me formatted emails and i open them with a basic email client, or one that has HTML disabled...
