Have any of you discussed the contradictions in the dub beliefs as regards the pagan roots of certain practices or beliefs? If so, with what success?
I mean if we reject religious customs that had pagan roots outright, then why not with the 1914 doctrine?
*** Thy Kingdom Come (copyright 1891) (1910 edition -- Studies In The Scriptures, vol. 3) p.342 ***
So, then, if we measure backward down the "First Ascending Passage" to its junction with the "Entrance Passage," we shall have a fixed date to mark upon the downward passage. This measure is 1542 inches, and indicates the year B.C. 1542, as the date at that point. Then measuring down the "Entrance Passage" from that point, to find the distance to the entrance of the "Pit," representing the great trouble and destruction with which this age is to close, when evil will be overthrown from power, we find it to be 3457 inches, symbolizing 3457 years from the above date, B.C. 1542. This calculation shows AD. 1915 as marking the beginning of the period of trouble; for 1542 years B.C. plus 1915 years AD. equals 3457 years. Thus the Pyramid witnesses that the close of 1914 will be the beginning of the time of trouble such as was not since there was a nation -- no, nor ever shall be afterward. And thus it will be noted that this "Witness" fully corroborates the' Bible testimony on this subject...
On a scale of 1 to 10 how would this argument, fare with your average brainwashed dub?

You are referring to Russell's pyramidology prophecies that's bad enough, but the guy was into worse things than that such as publishing the sayings of a spirit medium.
Of course the way he worked out the 1914 date is very dubious whether that is with the stone prophet or the seven times interpretation starting with the wrong date (607 BC) -

Ringo, that refers to a book containing the sayings of, gasp, a fallen angel as channelled to a medium woman, I can check the link later and post it. Russell had her book published and advised people to read it because supposedly the said demon was a "repentant" one revealing special knowledge to mankind!

Here's a good place to see the Angels and Women information:
http://www.premier1.net/~raines/women.html
The revisor of this book is of the opinion that the original manuscript was dictated to the woman who wrote it by one of the fallen angels who desired to return to divine favor.
Angels and Women, 1924 p. 5.
Nice shot of the cover and detailed synopsis, very revealing. Go see.

The real meaning of the word "pagan" is non-christian or non-religious. There are plenty of elements of those belief systems that jws accept. It is so hypocritical for them to pretend as though they don't.
