i started taking this as a appetite suppresant friday. i've searched high and low on the web and have yet to find anything negative about it....so far it works and i don't feel jittery or nervous...

here's a full story on it

    http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/11/18/60minutes/main656458.shtml

i was just checking to see if anyone possibly knew of any adverse side effects, b/c i can't seem to find any listed anywhere.

    luv, jojo

    Hi jojo,

I watched that segment on 60 minutes a few Sundays ago. I have not heard anything else about it being harmful, or otherwise. Seems like it really may work, but I try to be careful with anything that is not regulated by the FDA. Ya never know what they could find out later w. more controlled studies.

If it turns out to be safe and effective, I could see it coming in handy...something to stop my stomach from growling embarrassingly loud in the middle of a quiet class. grrrrrrr That would be nice!

Hope this helps. It's from http://www.virilityhealth.com/acatalog/hoodia_gordonii.html

Hoodia Gordonii may be destined to become the top weight watcher supplement of the year - and stay there! Dried powder or extracts of this cactus like plant from the Kalahari Desert in southern Africa tricks your brain into thinking you have a full stomach, the result being no hunger pains. This is not a "fat burner" or metabolism booster. It simply negates - as in "no desire" for food - your appetite for up to 24 hours a serving. Desert natives of the Sans tribe use it to go 2 or 3 days at a time without food and function normally. There are no known negative side effects, though some reports say many users experience a "good feeling" and others report a noticable aphrodisiac effect.

Looks like you're maybe on a winner with the side effects too

    AWESOME!!!!

i've actually noticed that i have more energy...not that nervous kind that you get with other diet pills...just pure natural well rested sleep....

    i love it!

    luv, jojo edited to add:

This is very interesting - we may have a new crop option for the farmers of eastern Washington, eastern Oregon and California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, etc...

Another product with promise is glucomannan (konjak). It is a powder produced from an oriental yam that forms non-caloric bulk in the digestive tract. Best of all, it is not a carb like starch. It can be used to make noodles of various types (shirataki noodles in your oriental food store).

Glucomannan is the main ingredient of that weight loss stuff tha Anna Nicole promotes. In capsule form it is pretty expensive, but there are some enterprising web entreprenuers who sell the flour in small bulk units. It can be used for thickening soups, gravies, stews, milkshakes...

The biggest obstacle to consumer access right now is the government

    (see http://www.foodnavigator.com/news/news-ng.asp?id=46057-eu-votes-for),

who slapped bans on many forms of glucomannan when it was found that the tough jelly it makes was causing some small kids to choke to death when they snorked a unit of oriental jelly cup candy. The jelly doesn't break up like jello will. It's like a very soft giant size "Dots" candy, if you remember them.
