Another product with promise is glucomannan (konjak). It is a powder produced from an oriental yam that forms non-caloric bulk in the digestive tract. Best of all, it is not a carb like starch. It can be used to make noodles of various types (shirataki noodles in your oriental food store).
Glucomannan is the main ingredient of that weight loss stuff tha Anna Nicole promotes. In capsule form it is pretty expensive, but there are some enterprising web entreprenuers who sell the flour in small bulk units. It can be used for thickening soups, gravies, stews, milkshakes...

who slapped bans on many forms of glucomannan when it was found that the tough jelly it makes was causing some small kids to choke to death when they snorked a unit of oriental jelly cup candy. The jelly doesn't break up like jello will. It's like a very soft giant size "Dots" candy, if you remember them.
