Hello All: Normally, I get between 20 to 30 Security Alerts per day, with a few hackers and Trojans. BUT .... Today has been an all TIME RECORD!

    172 Security Alerts!
    24 Attempts at Sub-Seven Trojans
    15 hacking Attempts

I am baffled as to why this sudden and enourmous increase attempts to get into my system. I am logging all the routing and ISP addresses of the 'attempted' hackers and proceding with a complaint to their ISP providers. I will keep you updated. - Amazing

    Amazing,

We are seeing similar intrusion numbers. I have had calls from work already today to alert me and ask me what precautions they need to take.

I have never seen so many HTTP attempts in such a short space of time from random requests to hit our systems. There are so many we have given up reporting them. I would advise anyone with a cable or DSL connection not to leave their machine connected while they are away from it.

I don't think it is personally directed at you, me or anyone specifically in here. The servers we were hearing about are those of clients and parties with absolutely no affiliation to this place.

I also received several emails with the Sircam / MM virus.

Do not open any emails with a pif or lnk extension as an attachement.

The contents of the emails will contain an introduction such as:

I send you this file in order to have your advice
or I hope you can help me with this file that I send
or I hope you like the file that I sendo you
or This is the file with the information that you ask for

This is a high risk virus.

Zounds! Me too! In fact, I'm getting so much stuff the lights on my cable modem are flashing like mad. Usually they don't flicker unless I'm getting something going up or down. This is nuts.

I really think that before it's over, we're going to start seeing some very, very nasty penalites for doing this kinda shit. I mean look at what these cowboys are are doing to the information infrastructure. And to the money that flows over it. And to the confidence of people who use it. These boys are really tickling the dragon's tail. One day it will turn and bite their fucking heads off.

Francois - one of our servers was running through a cable modem - it was getting whacked much more than the DSL or T1

I've been watching the lights pinging on my cable modem also...but I'm not worried, since I'm using a Mac! :)

Right from the get go, I've had a web-based e-mail address...meaning I can check my e-mail from any computer in any country, and also that when I move or change internet service providers, my e-mail address never changes!

And, since the web-based e-mail services use the latest in anti-virus technology, they automatically scan all e-mails and attachments for viruses and neutralize them. That way, if you're checking your e-mail from an internet cafe or from someone elses computer (say you're out of the country on vacation), you won't be infecting them!

PCs.....between 40,000 to 50,000 worms& viruses, plus back doors for hackers to break into.

Macs....around 35 known micro-worms (micro, because unlike a PC, nothing can run in the background on the Mac...as far as I know. Meaning, when one of those worms trys to infect the Mac, you'll see it pop up on the screen right away). Also, no back doors on a Mac.

By the way...this is not a Mac vs PC debate...just giving out known figures from Dr. Norton regarding computer viruses.

For those of you (I assume it is most) running Windows...is your machine up to date? If not - or if you don't know - perhaps this will help.

Microsoft has released patches which will block/correct issues from some of the latest worm viruses and fix other bugs also.

They can be obtained from http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

Then click the Product Updates Link.

It will scan your machine (it is not trying to get you it is trying to help you) and recommend any updates you might need.

I recommend running this at least every week and downloading the updates which are marked as "Critical".

MSIL, thanks for your alert and your admirable fortitude for toughing it out here. I predict you will wind up with some close friendships off-list.

Question for you or anyone up and about. Talking to Max today who noted his security system went off the chart with activity, then cable service went down. Digital TV frozen, can't contact IP, a major player. Am I to assume Code Red is taking down servers? Thnx.
