I've just been messing around on the net with yahoo groups. There's some interesting ones on there for ex-witnesses, although lots of "dead" groups with no activity. Anyone got any experience of starting one (not necessarily ex-witness related - anything). What is your experience with groups like these?

I might make up a crazy one for a laugh and invite you all.

ha, I see that group's been spammed by online sex\dating sites we were talking about in another thread.

I'm on about 10 groups right now, there's one for almost every topic you can imagine, and some you probably wouldn't have thunk.

There are some X-JW groups there too.

The problem is lots of groups with just 1 member like that example Valis posted. Unless you already know a few people with the shared interest, I wonder how they get off the ground. Especially if the interest is something like spatulas.

It's easy to start a group.

Just make sure that the members MUST contact you before joining. If you make it a completely free group where anyone can join at any given time, you'll have so many low-life spammers signing up that your head will spin.

I second sonnyboy on not allowing just anyone to join without approval. It's good for some groups because the nature of the group is such that shy people might not join if they've got to explain themselves to a moderator, but spam was the main reason I left a lot of Yahoo! groups. There's only one X-JW group I like reading. Leaving the messages public helps.
