`EOSTRE WAS THE PAGAN GODDESS OF THE SPRING'

What do you think is wrong with that quote from the April 1 1996 WT?

(raises hand) Oooh! Oooh! I know! Call on me!!

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eostre

Modern worshippers and writers describe Eostre as a "goddess of Dawn" based on the etymological relationship between her name and the Anglo-Saxon word for 'dawn'. Some Neo-pagans believe that she was sometimes depicted with a hare's head, though it is not possible to substantiate this belief as no known animal-headed deities appear in Germanic or Celtic cult objects. There are no known Celtic depictions of Eostre whatsoever.

Im sorry badboy but I didn't see that as a quote....I could be wrong I didn't read the whole thing but this iswhat I saw:

    The Origin of Easter

The name Easter, used in many lands, is not found in the Bible. The book Medieval Holidays and Festivals tells us that "the holiday is named after the pagan Goddess of the Dawn and of Spring, Eostre." And who was this goddess? "Eostre it was who, according to the legend, opened the portals of Valhalla to receive Baldur, called the White God, because of his purity and also the Sun God, because his brow supplied light to mankind," answers The American Book of Days. It adds: "There is no doubt that the Church in its early days adopted the old pagan customs and gave a Christian meaning to them. As the festival of Eostre was in celebration of the renewal of life in the spring it was easy to make it a celebration of the resurrection from the dead of Jesus, whose gospel they preached."

So many things have roots in Pagan times.... Christians who celebrate Easter now don't do it for the Pagan Goddess Eostre, but to celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus.... alt

I am not a Christian, yet I celebrate major holidays with Xian roots. No difference IMO if a Xian celebrates a holiday with non-Xian roots.

Were there other goddesses of Spring?

Plus the word "pagan" in the Roman empire times meant "non-Xian". It was not a specific group but meant Celtic, mythology, folk religions, etc. If we're to interpret Pagan to mean that, then yes there were many goddesses of Spring in many different belief systems.
