    Here's a mystery. I'll have to investigate when I have more time. The Watchtower Bible and Tract Society has received a letter patent from the Canadian Government. I wonder why?

    Patent Letters Patent n. are letters open for public inspection written by or on behalf of the sovereign usually granting land or privilege to a person or area and have been in existence for at least 600 years. Patents conferring protection on inventions sprang out of these in the 16/17th Centuries. ( from Matt Stephenson)

    Do a search for Watch Tower:

    Letter Patent 131498-7.

    I wonder if they may be registering some corporate names in order to "get at" Quotes?

    Thanks for the note, jgnat.

    Interesting that they rec'd their SLP on 08/11/2004, which is well before they sent out the C&D to me. Perhaps they knew, even then, that they were in trouble ("caught with their pants down", as my father likes to say) with respect to their complete lack of ownership and protection of their precious, beloved, Watch Tower corporate name.

    Also interesting to see who else rec'd a S.L.P. at the same time: Maharishi World Peace Development Institute 16/11/2004. Must have been "cult special" week at Industry Canada.

    This may be just a routine thing. According to this other web site (caveat: Quebec site, where the law is always a lot different than the rest of Canuckistan), a S.L.P. is for the following:

    Supplementary Letters Patent

    To amend the corporate charter of the non-profit legal person (Part III of the Companies Act), you have to apply for supplementary letters patent which will allow you to amend:

    * The name;
    * Head office;
    * Number of directors;
    * Immovable assets or revenue arising from;
    * Powers and purpose;
    * Other provisions.
