Has anyone heard? The schools are probably destroyed, and the ones that are being bused to Houston surely can't go into the Texas school system. Too many of them.
It just occurred to me that this is one more problem for the survivors.
I wonder if there will be the outpouring from the world, like there was for the tsunami.
on the live web cast of channel 4 in new orleans yesterday they interviewed the superintendent of schools , she said right now they just want everyone to take care of their families, make sure everyones survival needs are taken care of , and the powers that be are working on what to do about school.
Jefferson Parish says they hope to start school December 1. "This would a miracle" they said. But that is the goal. They suggest enroling children in other schools.

My guess would be that they will set up temporary schools after they stabilize and dry out the area.
Huston Governor stated that they will allow the children to be enrolled (at parent's request) into the area schools. They are struggling right now with providing places for people to live. I hear they are planning to put trailers to use in areas as soon as evac's are finished.
Husband woke me up this morning saying we could sit here watching the news and fretting about family and friends. OR we can do something (he had already started the ball rolling... lol).

The only thing I heard is that they're not expecting school to resume for three to four months.
Not only did the kids lose their homes, but their summer vacation as well.
thanks everyone. I have watched a lot of the coverage, but hadn't heard any school updates. So sad they have to wait until December.
the interview i saw the woman said
1. they simply dont know where school staff is, if they survived, where they evac'd too etc and they have to recover as well..
2. the emphasis right now is making sure kids are fed and clothed. it would be impossible to expect people who have evac'd to other cities to get school clothes and supplies and money for that purpose , when they arent going to be able to work and get income for who knows how long.
I missed three months of school during a Teacher's Strike in Toronto. I survived. I am boggled with the logistics of transporting, housing, and feeding so many people. Wow.
I suspect the refugees will organize themselves, as they did during WW2 in the prisoner-of-war camps.
Mulan I live in NW Louisiana and right now we are slammed with evacuees, the Motels are slammed full.
Right now, I think people are just trying to fight to live. Seriously, families are torn apart, husbands , wives, parents, etc are missing.
I talked to a friend of mine and she and her Mother took four kids that are from the NewOrleans area that are just a few of the mass evacuees that are in Sprinhill Louisiana civic center temporary shelter,,,,,,,,to Walmart just to buy them clothes. My friend lives an hour away from me and this town is almost in Arkansas and they are even full. A very small town compared to the city I am in now. My friend was so upset by what she saw and heard, she was cryin so hard over the stories the people told her. The people lost everything, have little money to their names.
I feel so sorry for the kids especially, and now they are going to miss so much school, but I guess our little part of the world is going thru almost war like destruction and the basic necessities like food , water, clothing , housing are priority.
