Canadian Red Cross Response - Proud moments

I met up with a group of 25 of the best and most experienced Canadian Red Cross Disaster Response Team members this morning at the Toronto airport.
From there we took a bus to Trenton military base where they boarded a flight to Houston and from there they will be deployed across the 4 affected States. Another 12 had made other arrangements and were meeting up with them down in Houston.
I was jealous of them and the opportunity they will be having to directly help in this tragedy. It looks like my turn will come with the next wave of deployments.
I was watching Larry King's special tonight and got a lump in my throat at one point when Terri Hatcher's spot was on. She said something along the lines of "Donate to the Red Cross. It is an organization that is doing something that is making a difference, sometimes between life and death."
For decades I dedicated my life to an organization that I had thought was God's visible channel for helping people. It feels good to be part of something now that actually is doing something to improve lives and save lives. That is all I really wanted out of the Witnesses and they failed in even that basic element of Christianity.
I am proud to wear the uniform of a Red Cross Disaster Team member. It lets me make a difference. It ends up I don't need god or religion to do that.
By way of Katrina response, I will have to be content playing an organizing/coordinating role for now but am looking forward to being deployed Stateside within the next month.
We are also working with Provincial and Municipal officials in Ontario to train their professional emergency managers and others (doctors, nurses, firefighters, etc) as Red Cross volunteers so they can be deployed under our banner so that even more experienced help can get to the people in need. This is a first in Disaster partnership here in Canada so I am hoping we will be sending our first joint team by late this week.
Thank you to any and all who have tried to make a difference in this disaster. Regardless of where you give, Salvation Army, Feed the Children, United Way thank you for caring and doing something.
