To you lurkers out there, I have a simple message:

Every day, when you wake up tell yourself, "Today, some things will get better, some things will get worse and most things

will stay the same". This point is so simple, countless Witnesses miss it - while repeating the unofficial Watchtower mantra,

"worse and worse, worse and worse". Many of the silly people who think New Orleans is a sign of doom are old enough to remember

when much of Europe was bombed flat and Japan was nuked/firebombed into defeat. If that isn't enough, Galveston was once

wiped out by a storm and Chinese cities have been wiped out in earthquakes. Cities come and go - and the world still goes on.

Big bad headlines sell newspapers and garner TV ratings - while good news barely gets noticed at all. Consider the recent case

of Dr.Mark Humayan, a talented researcher whose face adorns the cover of R&D magazine ( August 05). He is dedicated to

creating an artificial retina to give sight to the blind. His motivation? His grandmother lost all interest in living after she lost her

eyesight and this made him determined to end this sort of tragedy ( "Bringing Sight to the Blind" page 20, 21). He is making rapid

    progress.

Over time, the world is actually getting better, even with disasters and tragedies. Our ancestors didn't have Social Security,

refrigerators, microwaves, space missions, antibiotics, automobiles, airplanes, X-rays, ultrasound, CAT scans, television,

radio, Global positioning satellites, electricity, modern agriculture, ........ need I go on? Hardly anyone seems to have noticed

that China is now exporting food after centuries of starvation - and dire predictions of famines by "experts" that nothing could be done

in the 1970's ! Remember when the Soviets were implacable enemies? When Hitler and the Axis nearly conquered most of the world?

After 120 years of predicting that "Armageddon is Soon!", "it's just months away", It's just around the corner", - and my personal

favorite - "it can't be much longer now!!!!!" - the world is still here, warts and all!

    Thanks!

... and the real solution to disasters like New Orleans? Well before the "Awake" jumps in with empty promises, here it is:

    life span!

If you only have an adult life expectancy of perhaps 50 years, just how concerned are you likely to be about a potential

disaster that comes around every half century or so? If you had an expectancy of say, 100 - 200 years, things might look

different. Speaking about managing an economy "for the long run", John Keyes said "In the long run, we are all dead".

So, a whole economy might look different if managed by men with a l-o-n-g-e-r viewpoint.

and life span is what science is working to improve.

(Ecclesiastes 7:10) 10 Do not say: “Why has it happened that the former days proved to be better than these?” for it is not due to wisdom that you have asked about this.

(Ecclesiastes 1:9-11) 9 That which has come to be, that is what will come to be; and that which has been done, that is what will be done; and so there is nothing new under the sun. 10 Does anything exist of which one may say: “See this; it is new”? It has already had existence for time indefinite; what has come into existence is from time prior to us. 11 There is no remembrance of people of former times, nor will there be of those also who will come to be later. There will prove to be no remembrance even of them among those who will come to be still later on.

(2 Thessalonians 2:1-2) 2 However, brothers, respecting the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered together to him, we request of YOU 2 not to be quickly shaken from YOUR reason nor to be excited either through an inspired expression or through a verbal message or through a letter as though from us, to the effect that the day of Jehovah is here.
