ex-elders: how long do they keep disfellowshipping files on record?

  I recall at my old KH a locked and ominous steel filing cabinet in the basement library containing manila folder files for each disfellowshipping case that had taken place in the congregation. I found this out when an elder carelessly left this filing cabinet open during a meeting and I had wandered into the library during a fit of boredom. Being 11 years old, of course I read them!!! This was of course before the computer era!

  I wonder, how long do elders keep hard copies of all the dirty details of the disfellowshipping incident? Do they destroy them after reinstatement?

  Judicial matters: Confidential correspondence dealing with serious judicial matters should be kept in a safe place, accessible only to elders. It should be retained for at least five years from the date a case is handled to its completion, or longer if the elders deem it advisable in certain cases.

  I have known of some body of elders to keep the files even after the person has died.

  Maybe they archive the records -- like on microfiche -- so they can keep them forever.

  and if it involves molestation of a child the records are NEVER destroyed - that is an instruction to all BOE in the world
