Is he a good advert for JWs as 'law abiding citizens' or what ? Although I guess he is just following the example of his leaders in how they think the law applies to them!
This reminds me of a resident of neighboring town who had a beef with the tax officials of that town, and took to covering his house with hand-written signs decrying one injustice after another, most of them replete with scriptural references. In time, his house came to look like a huge bottle of Dr. Bonner's Castle Soap.
The attraction to the Witnesses that this person has goes to show how the organization is like a beacon, not to truth-seekers but to the many odd ducks who just can't fit in and deal with normal society. They give him a rationalization for it, and some wonderful justification for a "me-vs-them" mentality.
What a dickhead!! The society will be so proud of the way he is following their example of avoiding paying taxes at all times and throwing in a touch of perjury for good measure. LOL
Ellis didn't explain his refusal to take an oath Friday, but acquaintances said he's a Jehovah's Witness, a denomination that forbids swearing.
First of all, the article is not saying he is a baptized JW in good standing. It says "acquaintances said". Who are the acquaintances? Why did they not include their name? Is that just their own personal opinion of why this stupid-ass won't take an oath? He is most likely not a JW, maybe studied at one point, or went to a few meetings. If he is baptized, then I hope they disfellowshipped him for being an asshole.
I checked in the index of the "Flock" book, but could not find where being "an asshole" by itself is grounds for disfellowshiping. If it were, I am sure that I would have been tossed out the door myself many times over, having been guilty of that very charge.
Irrespective of his official relationship with the organization, it is interesting that such a kook would have more than just a fleeting familiarity with it, don't you think?
I've always wondered whether all that stuff in the 'Tower about what diligent taxpayers the Dubs are is just another instance of "True Christians should/shouldn't...". IOW, are Dubs the great taxpayers the Tower claims them to be. There was a very smug Dub who was coming to visit me for a few weeks. I found out from a friend who engaged him for some work that he offered a "less for cash" option - he was willing to not pay his taxes. That this rather eccentric case involving a Dub does not surprise me. However, lest anyone get the idea that he is a particularly creative Dub, that conspiracy theory that the US govt doesn't have the constitutional power to levy income taxes has been around for some time: http://evans-legal.com/dan/tpfaq.html
By the way Simon, that link no longer goes to the tax-protester story - nor does the one on the main page.
