Hi everyone I hope you guys can give me some advise ( the other times I have asked for help all of you have given me good and sound advise) so here I go again.

We hired someone today to work in my office and I will be managing her, this is the first time that I have had to mnage any one. Any advice on how to take on this responsibility? Just for a little backround, for the last year and a half only my boss and I have been working here, so for those you that have to do this every day what is your advice when it comes to managing another person?

    Aloha lola,

I suggest reading The One Minute Manager.

It's from the 80's, but is very short and to the point. You can probably find a used copy for a buck or two.

Ahhh Lola, you're too kind. Good luck with your new helper. I'm sure you will do fine.

The key to managing others is good communication and allowing them space to do their best...as the book will clearly explain.

I am not trying to sound preachy but if it works stick with it. I would suggest you Just for starters to apply the golden rule with your dealings with the one under you. I know that you have to draw a CERTAIN line because you are the boss, but as far as the way you interact the golden rule will bring out the best in the one you are managing.

Always be focused and give them plenty to do. Talk to them and build a professional relationship with them. Let them know what you expect and what they can expect in return.

I have the misfortune of being in such a position too...as I lead a team of 4, a team of people whose egos and professional abilities equal if not better mine in certain areas.

We sit down everyday and set out what has been done previously; what needs to be done and who is to do it...I dont agree with controlling every aspect of someones work and will only pay attention to their performance if it isnt coming upto scratch and the things we have agreed need to be done arent being done.

I find a sense of focus, interaction, and communication is the way to get the best out of people professionally; I try to be on hand constantly for advice on any issue which arises and where tricky areas arise professionally which cant be answered personally I throw it open to the rest for input.

I am simply duplicating what I learned from someone whom I considered to be one of the best managers around and it worked then and it works now IMHO.
