This is from a Ham operator:
The tragic situation in Myanmar (Burma) is impacting on us all. This morning we heard that 100,000 have died and possibly many more! We received the attached message direct from the branch yesterday so this will give you first hand information about what has happened and what they are doing. The Branch Committee Coordinator is an Australian friend of mine who used to be in our Bethel. He sent the information. As you say, what a pity we have no hams there. All communication is cut. I have an award for being the only communication between Vanuatu and Australia some years ago when all communication was cut except a brother there and myself. So, have a look at the report below.......
MYANMAR
Thus far we have received no reports of deaths or injuries to any of the local or foreign brothers. The main city of Yangon sustained only moderate damage from the cyclone. However, the city's infrastructure has been decimated. For the city's 7 million people, there is no electricity, many roads are still blocked, and drinking water and food are in short supply. Of the 800 brothers living in the greater Yangon area, we estimate that 30 homes have been completely destroyed and 70 houses have damaged roofs. Only two Kingdom Halls have damaged roofs and the branch's buildings sustained no damage whatsoever.
However, several hundred miles to the west of Yangon is the Ayeyarwady delta region which apparently was hit much harder by the cyclone. The government news agency is saying that tens of thousands of deaths have occurred in this region. We have no way of verifying this statement. Additionally, at this time we have almost no information concerning the 400 brothers and sisters that live in this region. Of course, we are praying that they are all safe. This morning, the branch dispatched two circuit overseers and a Bethelite driver in a vehicle equipped with emergency food, water, and money to inspect all of the 17 congregations in the Ayeyarwady. Due to the state of the roads and the remoteness of the area, we will have to wait four or five days before hearing their report. For your information, no foreign brothers and sisters were known to be in the Ayeyarwady delta region since foreigners are generally prohibited from visiting there.
At the present time, the branch is currently providing all Yangon congregations with safe drinking water and food. We have been able to contact the Governing Body and they are providing direction concerning our relief efforts. A Disaster Relief Committee has been organized in Yangon with teams of local construction workers preparing to repair damaged Kingdom Halls and houses. Unfortunately building materials in Yangon are scarce. We managed to purchase some construction items at a price that was fixed or six times the normal price. However, this afternoon the government abruptly seized all metal roofing sheets and similar items in Yangon and they prohibited anyone from selling them. At around the same time, we were trying arrange the purchase of a truckload of building materials in the city of Mandalay which is 10 hours away by road, but we have had to delay finalizing the deal since it remains to be seen if we can have the materials delivered here in Yangon.
On the other hand, many fine experiences have resulted during the last few days since the cyclone hit. Positive comments were received from many of our neighbors as we extended assistance to them, all resulting in praise to our God Jehovah. Within a few hours of the storm subsiding, more than 30 members of the Bethel family commenced clearing huge trees that blocked the roads nearby the branch. People stood by simply amazed. As the Bethelites continued working, a truckload of 30 soldiers arrived. Three soldiers got out of the truck each with a small hand axe and started clearing some trees. However, the other 27 soldiers simply stood by holding their machine guns. When a journalist observed this, he asked: "Who is this group of people that work so effectively compared with the government soldiers?" After being told, he remarked: "I wish more people showed the true community spirit like Jehovah's Witnesses do!"
We hope the above information has been helpful. We greatly appreciate your prayers on behalf of all of the brothers that are undergoing this emergency. The faith of the Myanmar brothers is strong and we know this week's Watchtower study entitled "Jehovah Hears Our Cries for Help" will help all of us to continue relying on our great God Jehovah.-Psalms 34:15.

FALSE ACCUSATIONS/INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY: DO YOU CARE????
by berylblue ini like to post this from time to time, on various boards -----no, it never goes over well, because people infer things which i am not attempting to convey.
i am merely pointing out that sometimes, when we are soooooooooo damned certain about the guilt of a certain person or persons.... we are wrong.
no, th case in the hyperlink below does not, on the surface, resemble the mormon case.

As far as who has it worse--a rape victim or the person falsely accused of rape, I think it all depends on the circumstances. I was raped by my older brother at about age 9 or 10. I despise him to this day. However, I've never been falsely accused of rape. I can't imagine what it would be like to spend time in prison, to be despised unjustly by your family, friends, community--to be placed on a list of offenders, to have this blight for the rest of your life. I think this could actually be worse.
However, in my circumstance, the abuse did not continue very long. Somehow I had the fortitude to put an end to it and was able to go on as a fairly normal person. I know many young girls (and boys) suffered much more than I. Perhaps I could say either way it could be equally bad.
I do agree that a person is innocent until proven guilty. I waited far too long to tell anyone what happened to me. Back in the 50's and 60's nice girls didn't talk about things like that. There is no way that I could prove anything now. I tried to get information out of other family members to see if there were similar experiences but didn't get anywhere. So apparently my brother is innocent--I'm the only witness.

I remember the DO saying not too long ago that everything printed by the WT is looked at by something like 70 pairs of eyes. I'll bet most of those are their attorneys' eyes.

Is HIV-screened blood safe?
by Bonnie_Clyde inthis is the title of an article in the awake!

This is the title of an article in the Awake! A baby in Nigeria is infected with HIV through a blood transfusion she received at one of Nigeria's leading hospitals.
The Awake! continues to rant that "Jehovah's Witnesses have long followed the Bible's direct to 'keep abstaining from blood.' The protection this has afforded them underscores the wisdom of obeying God's instructions."
Nothing new here--but it shows they are not letting up--despite the fact that HIV can be transmitted through organ transplants, which are allowable. Wouldn't it also follow that HIV could be transmitted through blood fractions?
I still have to slap myself when I remember that I followed this doctrine 100%.

Renegade Mormons - Abuse of Children- Broken Bones -Many Girls Pregnant
by flipper inhow long will religions claiming to worship god - tolerate the abuse of children , and try to hide it ?
catholics, jehovah's witnesses, mormons - my wife and i discussed it and i'm starting to feel that there is something about the stunted views of religions about sex in general that creates these monsters of sexual child abuse !
do we not just hear about the non-religious child abusers ?

Fact, the book of Mormon by Joseph Smith recommends polygamy.
I have more than a passing interest in where the book of Mormon recommends polygamy, as there are two Mormon missionaries (girls) who stop to see us. I'm wondering if they were following Joseph's Smith's example rather than the book of Mormon itself.

Shawn10538:
Mainstream Mormons are going to act like these "Renegade" Mormons have no connection whatsoever to the mainstream (read most popular) form of Mormonism. Yet, these so called renegades have a more honest interpretation of the book of Mormon. Fact, the book of Mormon by Joseph Smith recommends polygamy. That's where they got the idea in the first place. OK maybe the Bible started it all, but in any case, these Mormons are operating off of the same gold plates as mainstream Mormons. It wasn't until the Mormon church was being indicted by federal government that they miraculously and suddenly and coincidentally got a "revelation" that they should no longer practice polygamy. How like JWs are the Morons? Lots! Mormons will condemn this so called splinter group even though they practiced the same exact teachings for most of their history. How hypocritical it is then for Mormons to look down on this group as if they are innocent of the same charges. Mormonism, whether a splinter group or mainstream with a member running for office, is a CULT. CCCCUUUULLLLTTTT!!!!!
Qcmbr:
Book of Jacob - from the Book of Mormon
24 Behold, David and Solomon truly had many wives and concubines, which thing was abominable before me, saith the Lord.
25 Wherefore, thus saith the Lord, I have led this people forth out of the land of Jerusalem, by the power of mine arm, that I might raise up unto me a righteous branch from the fruit of the loins of Joseph.
26 Wherefore, I the Lord God will not suffer that this people shall do like unto them of old.
27 Wherefore, my brethren, hear me, and hearken to the word of the Lord: For there shall not any man among you have save it be one wife; and concubines he shall have none;
28 For I, the Lord God, delight in the chastity of women. And whoredoms are an abomination before me; thus saith the Lord of Hosts.
29 Wherefore, this people shall keep my commandments, saith the Lord of Hosts, or cursed be the land for their sakes.
30 For if I will, saith the Lord of Hosts, raise up seed unto me, I will command my people; otherwise they shall hearken unto these things.
31 For behold, I, the Lord, have seen the sorrow, and heard the mourning of the daughters of my people in the land of Jerusalem, yea, and in all the lands of my people, because of the wickedness and abominations of their husbands.I agree with Shawn about the mainstream Mormons being just as cultish as the renegade ones. However, I'm trying to figure out how the above verses from the book of Jacob apply. It sounds like it is condemning anyone with more than one wife. Am I reading it backwards? I have a book of Mormon here on my desk. These verses are in chapter 2.

If the G.B. and WTS don't have good motives, what is the point.....
by Mightyone inthis may be the topic of an old thread but, if the g.b.
and wts don't have good motives, what is the point of the whole religion?
i mean, it doesn't appear that anybody is getting rich or am i missing something.

I see your point, but if you were in a position like that which you mentioned, don't you think you would change the things you know to be wrong. I mean, the recent changes on just about everything being left up to our individual consciences, is a huge step to restoring the idea that we truely answer to Jehovah rather than man.
Ray Franz tried to change the things he knew to be wrong back in the 70's, and they kicked him out. He did get a little bit of financial help. I think his friend, Ed Dunlap, had it a little harder. There are severe repercussions for going against the Borg.

I was thoroughly acquainted with the "Paradise Lost" book. Had several studies in it when I was a pioneer. When our daughter was a baby, both Clyde and I taught her to read at a very young age by looking at the pictures and reading to her while pointing at the words. We were SO proud of her. I distinctly remember the picture of the people falling into the chasm at Armageddon and saying to her, "bad people die." I know, it was pretty sick. We were cloned to say things like that.
Now, 40 years later, she thinks that Clyde and I are going to die at Armageddon. We are "bad."
