Picking on Harold Camping- again

It is the Public edition. The writers are banking on the readers knowing next-to-nothing about JWs.

Anyway, it's typical doublethink.

"We're not like Harold Camping (even though we put our unique spin on Bible prophecy and predict specific events to occur very, very soon)."

"We're not creationists (but we believe God created everything)."

"We're not political (despite teaming up with UN-related organizations to lobby for religious freedoms)."

"We believe in freedom of belief (but not for our own members)."

"We obey the Bible's command to abstain from blood (even though we take blood in fractionated form)."

Etc., etc.

Memorial compulsory for "respectful observers" ?

maybe i am ignorant but why why why pray tell.

if i am not jewish and not of the 144k why is it necessary (compulsory even) for me to attend the memorial ?.

what is the scriptural precedent?.

There are lots of ceremonies you go to just observe but not participate in. Inaugurations, weddings, baptisms, graduations, etc.

Sure, but what if you were specially invited to the wedding reception or the graduation party or whatever as a guest, and you were personally offered the food and drink but you were told that it wasn't meant for you?

I only ask because I dont see the point in going to a party where I am denied access to the buffet.

It's worse. You're invited to the party and they pass round the food and drink under your nose but you've been told it's not for you and can't accept anything.

The old Mosaic Law was more inclusive toward Gentile proselytes than the JW system. They could literally partake of the Passover lamb; they could literally partake of the communion sacrifice with the priests. The 'alien resident' was to be treated the same as the native Jew.

Some of the offerings and sacrifices of the Law were voluntary, whereas others were compulsory. The burnt offering, for example, was voluntary. It was presented to God in its entirety, even as Jesus Christ willingly and wholly gave his life as a ransom sacrifice. The voluntary communion sacrifice was shared. One part of it was presented to God on the altar, another portion was eaten by the priest, and still another by the offerer. Comparably, for anointed Christians, the Memorial of Christ’s death is a communion meal.—1 Corinthians 10:16-22.

Yet, the "spiritual Gentiles," and converts to Christianity, i.e. the "other sheep," CANNOT even symbolically partake of the ultimate Communion Sacrifice (thus sharing it with the "spiritual priests") or Passover Lamb, despite that sacrifice being meant for everyone. The JW system is a step backward from the Mosaic Law rather than it harmonizing with the intentions of Christianity which was to be MORE inclusive and break down divisive walls!

of course, there is no accounting for the difference in our solar years and the bible's lunar years, which makes the math have a very different outcome.

I cannot deduct was it seven years including Jesus ministry or seven years after his death.

1881 - The 7 year period from 1874 to 1881 was something to do with how long it took to build Solomonic temple in the OT.

the 2013 edition of the new world translation renders 2 kings 17:1 as:.

in the 12th year of king ahaz of judah, hoshea the son of elah became king over israel in samaria; he ruled for nine years.. this is in fact a better rendering than the previous nwt, which stated:.

in the twelfth year of ahaz the king of judah, hoshea the son of elah became king in samaria over israel for nine years.. despite their improved rendering, the watch tower society still claims that hoshea's reign 'really' began in 758 bce, but that it was 'established' in the 12th year of ahaz.

3½ years after Oct. 1874 was spring 1878. This paralleled the 3½ years of Jesus' ministry from his baptism up to when he was hailed as King riding into Jerusalem. In 1878, the Church was inspected (Jesus inspected the Temple in Jerusalem too), the apostate Church was cast off and Jesus was installed as heavenly King. From 1878, it was believed, any 'spirit-begotten' members who died would immediately go to heaven and those who had died before that date would be resurrected to heaven.

1881 is not as straight forward. They thought they'd all be in heaven by then or that the heavenly calling would be ended by then with only 'replacements' afterward. There are some more parallels with Jesus' 3½ year ministry, extending favor to the (Jews) nominal church, and a 7 year period when the Solomonic temple was built (1874 - 1881).

Adventist Miller calculated 1844 as the year of Christ's return. It didn't happen, of course, and the non-event became known as the Great Disappointment.

Russell (Barbour?) built on this failed date by using more 'prophetic parallels' which went something like this:

1844, the Bridegroom (Matt. 25) was expected to make an appearance. He didn't. He 'tarried' or delayed for 30 years which was akin to the 30 years from his birth to his baptism and the start of his ministry or 'harvest work.' Thus the Bridegroom 'came' in 1874 and divided the wise virgins from the foolish ones (this will be where the ideas about 1878 fit in).

Just as it took 40 years from the beginning of Jesus' ministry and the institution of Christianity (the 'Gospel Age' - c. 30 CE onwards) to the overthrow of the Jewish system (70 CE), so it would take 40 years from Jesus' return in 1874 to the overthrow of Gentile rulership in 1914 and the inauguration of the Millennial Age.

Oh, and as already mentioned, there were the Jubilee cycles and other prophetic numbers that were slotted in too.

It was a nice idea at the time and appeared to all hang together neatly on the face of it. I can understand why it hooked some people in.
