Using the "C-Word" With My Wife
by breakfast of champions inmonths ago, i commented on another thread about a strategy i was using to introduce my wife to the way cults work--without using the word "cult" and scaring her away.
here's my first comment on that thread:.
i pulled hassan's bite model off the internet and imported it into my word processor.

For those looking for the list he used, it looks like he posted it in the original thread that he linked to in the OP.

Sounds like I picked a good one to skip (as if that's hard to do). I just wish my wife wasn't there listening to that crap.

BOC - Well done and good luck with your continued progress. Are you still attending the meetings as often as she is or have you stopped going? If so, had you stopped going when you showed her the BITE list? I'm starting to wonder if my continued attendence will help me reach my wife or if it's only serving to drive me insane.
Take care not to mix-up your "L"s with your "N"s
Yeah, when i saw the thread title, I saw this thread going in an entirely different direction.
I'm glad your wife is intelligent enough to allow stimulating conversations to take place. Mine is not. That is why I must have intellectual affairs.
I know that sounds mean, but..... Perhaps I should say that her emotions override her intelligence. It's a cult after all, and they are good at manipulating emotions.
We might be married to the same woman. The value of the meetings to my wife seems to be entirely about chatting with friends before/after meetings, and avoiding the intrinsic guilt associated with skipping. I don't know how to get past that...her parents did a mighty fine job of instilling the whole "bad association" crap in her, so sometimes merely talking to nice (usually older) folks that we run into in a bar for a half hour usually results in her making some comment about how we shouldn't be around worldly people (even though she genuinely enjoys herself in the moment). So I need to get her more exposure to the real world, but I fear her indoctrination is so strong that she'll never break away.
Anyway, I don't mean to derail the thread. Congrats to BOC, even if it takes you a while to be fully out, I'm sure it feels amazing just to be making steady progress...wish I knew how that felt.

Yeah, its pretty clear that these articles are only intended to preach to the choir. They'll reinforce the jws conviction that Satan has "blinded the minds of the unbelievers" and that's the only reason that anyone believes in evolution. The target audience isn't anyone who even has doubts centering on the topic, because it'll just leave them dissatisfied (and those folks are probably the ones who'll eventually wake up anyway) and certainly no one who is already aware of even a small portion of the evidence for evolution.
This is just the WTS puffing up the r/f to give them their feeling of superiority. If they can convince them that they're just soooo much smarter than the general public it just serves to further separate the jws from the worldlies. Not only that, but it also makes it less likely that anyone will bother to help them learn the truth about the topic. No one wants to argue with someone with a superior attitude who also happens to be a complete imbicile. Its just not worth the time.

Question for those attending mid week
by All for show indo you all know how many attend vs sundays?
talking to friends and family all find it so boring/difficult to sit through they say their meeting midweek attendance is about 50 percent less than sundays, with at least 15 percent of those leaving at the half.
we have had 3 local needs this year on staying the entire meeting, but people still leave, happily.

'round here I'd say attendance is 40-50 on thursday, and 60-70 on sunday, in a congregation with around 90 pubs.

Found some more ironic WT quotes I thought I'd share (emphasis mine)...
w03 1/1 p27 - taking things out of context is a tactic used by satan!
A THEATER critic for a newspaper once went to see a certain play. He did not much like it and afterward wrote: “If triviality is what you happen to be wanting, by all means go and see this play.” Later, the promoters of the play published an advertisement that featured a quote from the critic’s review. The quote was: “By all means go and see this play”! The advertisement accurately quoted the critic’s words, but it lifted them out of context and thus grossly misrepresented his view.
That example illustrates how important the context of a statement can be. Taking words out of context can distort their meaning, just as Satan distorted the meaning of Scripture when he tried to mislead Jesus. (Matthew 4:1-11) On the other hand, taking the context of a statement into account helps us to get a more accurate understanding of its meaning.
w11 2/15 p19 - who else takes things out of context? Satan's best friends, of course, those evil apostates!
André, who had served Jehovah for years, had the bitter experience of being led astray by apostate thinking. He felt that having a quick look at an apostate Web site would not be dangerous. He recalls: “Initially, I was attracted to the so-called truths that the apostates spoke of. The more I examined what they said, the more I came to think that I was justified in leaving Jehovah’s organization. But later, as I did some research on the apostates’ arguments against Jehovah’s Witnesses, I became aware of how crafty the false teachers were. Information taken out of context was their ‘strong evidence’ against us. Thus, I decided to start reading our publications again and to attend the meetings. Soon I realized how much I had missed.” Happily, André returned to the congregation.
Evidently the WTS is a close associate of satan, and may even be an apostate organization!

I wonder just how evil the Awake editor is? Did he (or a minion) actually read the article from its original source, or did they pull the misleading partial quotation from some fundy creationis website?
I suspect the latter scenario will be the excuse given by any JW that is confronted with the misquotes. If anyone suggests that they incompletely vetted the quote I'll just refer them to the 2011 yearbook (page 13):
In summary, the Writing Department insists on using only material that is accurate and truthful, even regarding seemingly insignificant details. As a result, “the faithful and discreet slave” can consistently supply spiritual food that brings honor to “the God of truth,” Jehovah.
So, if this is true, then it would be impossible that they just grabbed these quotes off of some fundamentalist website. This suggests that they would have read the entire article prior to using the quotes to ensure accuracy. They must also have checked the credentials of the author and decided that the author is on solid footing in their field, just like they must've done with Michael Behe as well....oh wait...his own science department has published papers refuting just about everything he stands for.
But, I wonder, how would the WTS feel if something they'd written was ever misquoted to further a contrary agenda?
This civil war created immediate problems for the small group of Jehovah’s Witnesses. The press labeled them an “anti-Christian sect and socially pernicious.” Journalists misquoted articles from Awake! and wrongly claimed that the Witnesses’ purpose was “to justify, if not to incite, the acts of terrorism that the north of the Province has experienced recently.” Beneath a photo of Awake! was the caption “Religious propaganda poisons the spirits of the natives.”
2001 Yearbook - p80.
The funny thing is, the perpetrators of this plot to cast the WT in a bad light actually painted a very accurate picture of reality with their caption.

Not on JW.org: SIX Texas victims acuse Jehovah's Witness Elder & Circuit Overseer of sexual abuse, and bring lawsuit against Watchtower for cover-up.
by Balaamsass2 insexual exploitation and abuse of six young children leads to lawsuit in dallas county.
dallas, oct. 23, 2014 /news.gnom.es/ six young adults, from north texas, all sexually abused as children, filed suit today in dallas, texas state court against three north texas jehovahs witnesses congregations (dallas, plano, and greenville), the watchtower bible and tract society of new york, and an elder.. sexually abused when they were ages 4 through 14, the plaintiffs were children of members of the dallas, plano, and greenville jehovahs witnesses congregations.
the suit states that they were repeatedly sexually abused and molested by an elder and an unknown regional circuit overseer, and that they and their families were threatened with discipline and harm if they disclosed the abuse to anyone.

My understanding is once a lawsuit is filed you can't shuffle or hide assests.
It's not about the ones that have been filed. Its about the ones that come after, once other victims see people winning verdicts against the WTS.

I can't wait for the candice conti case to finish. The several recent lawsuits are just a leak in the levees. When they have to conceed the conti case, the levees will break and the flood waters will come forth!
