new assembly experience... what do you reckon to this one?
by purrpurr inok so aparently there was this young girl who wanted to study with the jw's because she loved the bible so much.
she asked her fathers permission but he refused, after much nagging though he said she could have a study if she was prepared to have one of her fingers chopped off.
he thought the is would stop her but she was willing so he got a knife and cut off one of her fingers... a little while later she wanted to attend the meetings and he said no and again when nagged said she could attend meetings if she had another finger chopped off so she agreed and he chopped off a second finger.

Did anyone at the assembly call the police and report the father for child abuse?
Why didn't the person who was studying with her call the police after the loss of the first finger? Surely that would've been the 'loving' thing to do! This is clearly a load of bull.

Apostates are more all knowing than GOD?
by Maat13 inif "apostates" can predict what jw.org will do (i.e., doctrinal changes, business practices, etc), but jw.org gb is led by god's holy spirit, then yes.
apostates are more all knowing than god.
random thought of the day...i'm sure it's not original.. maat.

I'd like to think I'm more all-knowing than someone's imaginary friend.
But yeah, it's pretty rediculous when you consider (as was mentioned in another thread that recently got bumped) that people can be booted out of the cult for having a better knowledge of "truth" than the official doctrine, then official doctrine eventually changes. And no one thinks "why have I been shunning this guy for years, when he was kicked out for essentially being more 'spiritual' than the GB?"

Don't hurt me...no more...
I'm glad that I'm not the only one who now has this stuck in their head. Than's alot NHAH!
There are a few different types of love, but they're all just biochemical and neurological effects that were developed over the 3.5 billion years of evolution. Species (typically social mamals) that developed chemical responses that lead them to take care of their offspring, protect other members of the group, etc. are all more likely to survive as a group. Even if love drives someone to protect a member of the group that is not their direct decendent, they're still protecting a possessor of the genetic makeup that predisposes a person to love (in most cases, anyway) so this genetic predispostion made members of the group more likely to survive to pass on their genes.
Love, and indeed all emotion, is a distortion of your thought that is "designed" by evolution to cause you to behave in a manner that is more likely to cause your genetic makeup to survive indefinitely.

Awake January 2015: How did life begin? - More misquotes
by Designer Stubble in
some might assume that a scientifically-minded person would pick evolution and that a religious person would pick creation.
but not always.. rama singh, professor of biology at canadas mcmaster university, says: the opposition to evolution goes beyond religious fundamentalism and includes a great many people from educated sections of the population.
.
end-of-quote in awake.

Using the "C-Word" With My Wife
by breakfast of champions inmonths ago, i commented on another thread about a strategy i was using to introduce my wife to the way cults work--without using the word "cult" and scaring her away.
here's my first comment on that thread:.
i pulled hassan's bite model off the internet and imported it into my word processor.

For those looking for the list he used, it looks like he posted it in the original thread that he linked to in the OP.

Sounds like I picked a good one to skip (as if that's hard to do). I just wish my wife wasn't there listening to that crap.

BOC - Well done and good luck with your continued progress. Are you still attending the meetings as often as she is or have you stopped going? If so, had you stopped going when you showed her the BITE list? I'm starting to wonder if my continued attendence will help me reach my wife or if it's only serving to drive me insane.
Take care not to mix-up your "L"s with your "N"s
Yeah, when i saw the thread title, I saw this thread going in an entirely different direction.
I'm glad your wife is intelligent enough to allow stimulating conversations to take place. Mine is not. That is why I must have intellectual affairs.
I know that sounds mean, but..... Perhaps I should say that her emotions override her intelligence. It's a cult after all, and they are good at manipulating emotions.
We might be married to the same woman. The value of the meetings to my wife seems to be entirely about chatting with friends before/after meetings, and avoiding the intrinsic guilt associated with skipping. I don't know how to get past that...her parents did a mighty fine job of instilling the whole "bad association" crap in her, so sometimes merely talking to nice (usually older) folks that we run into in a bar for a half hour usually results in her making some comment about how we shouldn't be around worldly people (even though she genuinely enjoys herself in the moment). So I need to get her more exposure to the real world, but I fear her indoctrination is so strong that she'll never break away.
Anyway, I don't mean to derail the thread. Congrats to BOC, even if it takes you a while to be fully out, I'm sure it feels amazing just to be making steady progress...wish I knew how that felt.

Yeah, its pretty clear that these articles are only intended to preach to the choir. They'll reinforce the jws conviction that Satan has "blinded the minds of the unbelievers" and that's the only reason that anyone believes in evolution. The target audience isn't anyone who even has doubts centering on the topic, because it'll just leave them dissatisfied (and those folks are probably the ones who'll eventually wake up anyway) and certainly no one who is already aware of even a small portion of the evidence for evolution.
This is just the WTS puffing up the r/f to give them their feeling of superiority. If they can convince them that they're just soooo much smarter than the general public it just serves to further separate the jws from the worldlies. Not only that, but it also makes it less likely that anyone will bother to help them learn the truth about the topic. No one wants to argue with someone with a superior attitude who also happens to be a complete imbicile. Its just not worth the time.

Question for those attending mid week
by All for show indo you all know how many attend vs sundays?
talking to friends and family all find it so boring/difficult to sit through they say their meeting midweek attendance is about 50 percent less than sundays, with at least 15 percent of those leaving at the half.
we have had 3 local needs this year on staying the entire meeting, but people still leave, happily.

'round here I'd say attendance is 40-50 on thursday, and 60-70 on sunday, in a congregation with around 90 pubs.
