I read an article a couple years ago (and it actually helped me in my awakening) that made a very strong case that AA (and by extension, many 12 step programs) is a cult, or at least on the cult spectrum. It was an interesting read.

Sunday's NA meeting
by Pistoff inshe begins:.
i have never spoken before in a meeting, and i am nervous.
i am one week away from having 6 months clean.. at sunday nights meeting, millie spoke for the first time, and it made me consider again the merits and pitfalls of belief.. me, i have been in recovery since the mid 80s and have recently begun attending na meetings again, just to feel more sane and to be there for newcomers; i know how great it was to have people at meetings with time when i started going.. halfway through her sharing, she said:.

Is there a list of JW contradictions / double standards anywhere?
by BenRichards inas i mentioned in a recent thread, i've relatively new here.
have been lurking for a few weeks and just started posting.. one of the things i'm finding interesting about this site is how often someone posts a set of jw published material that contradicts each other.
for example the other day someone posted about lecithin.

The most comprehensive listing of flawed doctrine and doctrinal flip-flops that I've come across is www.jwfacts.com
If you look under the changed teachings section you'll probably find some of what you're looking for.
Welcome to the site, I wish you all the best on your journey to living outside of undue influence.

Jehovahs Witnesses in USA - prefer a bigger government providing more services and involved in regulating morality.
by Sol Reform injehovahs witnesses in usa - prefer a bigger government providing more services and involved in regulating morality .. interesting that jehovahs witnesses who don't vote, even got on this graph.. " what are the political positions of religions and churches in america?.
this new graph maps the ideologies of 44 different religious groups using data comes from pews religious landscape survey.. this survey included 32,000 respondents.
it asked very specific questions on religion that allow us to find out the precise denomination, church, or religion of each person.. .

It's interesting to me that when I was younger my views also strongly favored a strong central government that legislated morality. As I grew more and more disillusioned with the cult, however, I also identified more and more as a libertarian.
I think in order to be a JW you have to believe that it is possible for a small group of people to be able to determine what's best for everyone. It makes sense that if that view changes in one area, it might change in another. I never really thought about how those changes in my outlook coincided before.

Whoa par16 was a doozy...stressing how important it is to help children to trick an unbelieving parent into dropping their objection to the cult. Also, it's very important to baptize kids before they get any taste of freedom or develop critical thinking skills.

Following the lead of (I think) stuckinarut, I'm posting while carrying the mic for this study, makes the bs a bit more bearable.
Par 10 seems to be encouraging love bombing... Encouraging everyone to show new one that they have a place in the congregation. Disturbing how blatant they can be about it and no one notices.

Have You Ever Rejected Being Appointed an Elder/MS Before the Announcement?
by GermanXJW inwhen i was a jw several brothers (ms) told me in private that the elders had asked them several times if they did not want to become an elder.
they said they rejected because it was too much responsibility for them.
were you ever approached that the boe wanted to make you an elder but you refused?

Has anyone used scripture in their refusal of appointment? The next time they try to pressure me, I'm thinking of using James 3:1 and maybe Matthew 23:8 and follow up by stating that I'm not interested in carrying any title. I'd be interested to hear thoughts on how that might be received.

Should some people actually be Witnesses?
by Apognophos init seems to me like certain people actually benefit from joining the religion.
primarily i'm thinking of ones with drug problems who are only able to quit because they are working towards baptism.
another example would be those who are always getting in fights or who have a big ego, and who learn to be pacifistic and humble as a witness.

IMO the cost to innocent folks is too high to justify the slight good that might be done for a few former drug addicts. Especially when you consider that if the JWs didn't exist, the people that 'need' the cult would have numerous ways to 'find Jesus' that don't consist of joining a cult.
You don't burn your house down to get warm.

Treatment of DFed family members. JW.org FAQ vs Nov 2014 WT
by EndofMysteries inon jw.org faq, " do jehovahs witnesses shun former members of their religion?, those who were baptized as jehovahs witnesses but no longer preach to others, perhaps even drifting away from association with fellow believers, are not shunned.....what of a man who is disfellowshipped but whose wife and children are still jehovahs witnesses?
the religious ties he had with his family change, but blood ties remain.
the marriage relationship and normal family affections and dealings continue.".

If you must be a fence sitter, at a minimum stop contributing any $ to this organization.
I know in my case, that's the first thing that changed. I went from contributing 10x the per-publisher suggestion for most things to $0 overnight once I saw some indications where my money was actually going.

You know, on further thought, he'd fit right in. He has a mustache, but no beard and he already calls everyone "brother"

Homeless people do not have computers to log on to JW.Org, nor do they have money to donate to WT's real estate ventures. Giving them a tract, despite it's so-called purpose of guiding them to "truth" and "everlasting life", is a waste of WT resources.
It's interesting that you say that, our last CO gave a talk (and I suspect everyone else who went got the same talk) about not being prejudiced, and we should preach to everyone. The material that he seemed to talk about from the outline seemed to be mostly about race/hobbies/etc. but the little bit of personal 'color' that the CO added was a personal experience involving a homeless guy, that basically ended with him saying that we need to be sure to preach even to the homeless.
It's a funny situation when the official policies (preach to everyone) of the cult start to go against it's unofficial goals (make money). I wonder if there will be a WT article encouraging people to consider the mental health of those who they preach to, or to acknowledge that some people are too far gone as a way of discouraging JWs from witnessing to the homeless that will do nothing but leach the WTS's money (as they see it) from the congregation.
I guess if they're just going to transition to ineffectual tracts that direct people to a website, that completely solves the problem of preaching to the homeless, too.
