designs - I'm glad Sarah Palin didn't get to be POTUS. Luckily, US citizens have to put up with Barack Obama's brand of lunacy.

Officer Wilson not indicted in killing of Michael Brown
by Simon inafter a thorough investigation and weighing of the evidence the grand jury has decided not to indict the officer.. the reaction so far seems as predicted - people refuse to accept that the result represents justice despite claims that is what they wanted.. there is now violence and vandalism, including gunshots.
let's hope the police contain the troublemakers.. .

'If being a JW taught me anything it's TRUST NO ONE' - absolutely fantastic point. Having survived j-dubland myself, I trust myself only, no-one else.

Thank you, designs, for answering my question and giving an honest answer. BTW I wasn't advocating boxing as a career - I agree with you that it's dangerous and to be avoided.
Joe Frazier must also have been fearless outside the ring. As a Gullah he was no doubt the victim of white bigotry and racism but also other blacks may have viewed him as backward. Gullah people speak their own type of creole, similar to West African English (Nigerian pidgin, Camtok) and Jamaican patois. They also cling to African culture, at least until very recently - white magic, black magic, juju, etc. Muhammad Ali ruthlessly took the p1$$ out of him by calling him Uncle Tom and 'gorilla' but ironically Joe Frazier was the stereotypical black man that Ali claimed to champion.
I don't know what colour you are but I really do feel that the black community needs to pull its socks up, and needs look no further than JF's example.

'Slavery still exists on a huge scale' - in Africa and Saudi Arabia, certainly. The trans-saharan slave trade existed before Whitey ever clapped eyes on Africa and ended officially in 1962. But in the West?

designs - you make a good point in your last post. I accept that a British Indian/Pakistani wouldn't be voted in as British PM, in the same way as a person of European descent wouldn't be elected leader of Pakistan/India. Whether this is 'racist' or merely reflects the democratic will of the voting public is up for debate.
You've answered my 'Danes' question but failed to consider my other points and questions I raised in my posts 397 & 399.
For instance, should Joe Frazier be held up as an example for disadvantaged American people?

Also, I realise that this will probably go down like a lead ballon but when African-Americans speak of the terrible injustices of slavery (correctly) why is the role of African royalty and chieftans rarely mentioned, if at all?
If all races are equal then surely the selling of black slaves by black chiefs is just as bad as the buying of black slaves by white colonialists, no?

designs - you've basically repeated your point about 500 years of history, a point I accepted in my previous post. I feel that you've chosen to ingore the points and questions in this post.

Your point about the last 500 years - slavery, historical and contemporary ill-treatment of black people - must be a factor in this and therefore is also accepted.
Speaking of Charles Dickens, I myself come from a working class background - I'm the first from my dad's side of the family to go to uni. My mum's side are on the lowest rung of middle class at best and some went to uni. However, I don't hate posh people on sight or begrudge them their life-style - it's the hand they're dealt with, they're just people with all the good points and bad points as anyone else.
Also, how far back in history is too far? At some point a line has to be drawn, no? I'm an Englishman, does that mean I should carry resentment NOW towards modern Danes for what Danish vikings did to my Saxon ancestors?
I mentioned Joe Frazier (RIP) earlier in this thread and feel the need to mention his name again. He was Gullah, geechee, from a poor background in racist South Carolina. He had every excuse/reason to hate all white people on sight and feel sorry for himself. But he took advantage of the opportunity given him as an American and through sheer determination succeeded. IMO he should be held up as a model for all disadvantaged Americans - black and white.

You make a good point, designs. Waiving/cutting tuition fees for poor black people (or poor people of any colour) seems reasonable enough.
But I still feel the elephant in the room is ignored - it seems in both the US and the UK that black people are absurdly over-represented as victims and perps of violent crime. What's the deal? Is it cultural? Lack of good father figures? Is this refusing to toe the line arrogance?
I feel it's a shame the situation is as it is. Here in England, I remember reading about a little Indian girl who was shot in the head, caught in the cross-fire between rival black gang members in Brixton. Shortly after, some members of the 'black community' put a text message out entitled 'don't snitch' - absolutely disgusting.
I speak as a white guy who has known several (~20) black people as friends and work colleagues over the years. They were all nice, decent people except one, IMO.

Ok designs, thank you.
So the slogan 'black lives don't matter' becomes reasonably accurate - not among cops but in da hood.
