Poll: Atheists overwhelmingly oppose the death penalty, but most Christians favor it
by Disillusioned JW insee https://friendlyatheist.patheos.com/2021/06/16/poll-atheists-overwhelmingly-oppose-the-death-penalty-most-christians-favor-it/ .
i am an atheist and i disapprove of the death penalty.
i remember michael dukakis, when he was a usa presidential candidate, saying i he was opposed to the death penalty - even for rapists and murderers.

The problem with any punishment is, that callous criminals will commit murder, worse crimes, to keep hiding their identity, escape punishment - ok, but as you say, 'any punishment', criminals would also act that way to try and escape a prison sentence.
So I don't know why this would make jail time better than death.

Atheists are more likely to be humanists than theists - this is highly debatable, lol.
(See Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, etc.)
Which group was key to ending slavery in the US? Christians, from what I remember.
It wasn't the Muslims, the atheists, the tribal religionists which ended slavery, was it ...

I think the death penalty should be kept - or reinstated in the case of the UK - so that the worst criminals are eliminated from society.
Their is a myth going around that prison sentences are to rehabilitate the criminal. This is false - sentences are there as a punishment for serious crime.
Some people who commit very serious crimes are beyond rehabilitation, and deserve to be put to death (e.g. Peter Sutcliffe aka the Yorkshire Ripper).
Of course, having the death penalty on the books can help a criminal see sense and confess in exchange for a life sentence. This is another reason to keep it/reinstate it.

Do you have any good movie mistakes or bloopers?
by LoveUniHateExams inhey folks!.
just wondering if any of you jwn posters have favorite movie mistakes or bloopers?.
i think jackie brown (1997) is an excellent film, and the scene featuring ordell robbie (samuel l. jackson) and beaumont livingston (chris tucker) is perfect … well, almost.. samuel l. jackson almost bursts out laughing at 4 mins 52 secs, because of chris tucker's improvised line ('you catch a n*gga off guard with this sh1t!').

@TD
I'm actually not that good in picking out flaws in films - certainly not the first time I watch them. Every time I watch a film for the first time I put on the English subtitles, even though I'm a native English speaker. I'm not deaf but I'd describe myself as a lazy listener - if a scene is visually interesting, I'll not hear what's being said.
In all the examples I've given in this thread, I've seen the films many many times.
Here's a little error in Fright Night (1985) which should've been fixed in the edit: when Jerry Dandridge is behind Charley and says "now we wouldn't want to wake your mother, would we Charley ... then I'd have to kill her too" if you look carefully, you'll notice that when the camera switches onto Charley's face at the end of each line, Dandridge's mouth is mouthing his line (@3mins 26secs).

Yeah, I've seen Fright Night many times, too, lol.

… and here's the other one.
Rocky vs Drago, this time.
At 6mins 44 secs, you can see Drago getting battered by Rocky's body punches. And Drago's hair looks fairly neat and freshly styled- throughout the previous rounds his flat top had gotten messy with the hair sticking to his head.

Good God, I'm a nerd, lol.

Here's a couple of continuity errors from Rocky IV (1985) …
Just before Apollo Creed fights Ivan Drago, Creed shouts 'I want you! I want you!' (@4mins 04 secs) and is not wearing gloves, you can see his finger pointing. Immediately before and after, he's wearing white boxing gloves.

Good catch, TD, I'd never have noticed that!
And here's one of the most famous recent bloopers in movie history: the throne room scene in The Last Jedi (2017), and the case of the praetorian guard's disappearing weapon.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c85KaDSMIRM
The throne room scene has become notorious. In addition to the piss-poor fight choreography, check out the disappearing weapon from 10 mins 22 secs to 10 mins 25 secs. Luckily, TLJ had Ryan Johnson at the helm and this film-making genius didn't see the need to shoot another take.
