I hope the family of Nathan Cirillo get support and help at this time. I also hope those injured maked a full recovery.
I'm glad one gunman has been killed. If there are any more on the run, I hope they get put down also.
one soldier is shot at war memorial.

there are some mental illnesses which come with the potential for extreme violence.
i'm not talking the sociopath here who kills without remorse, but those mentally ill people while in the throes of their delusions who are driven to kill.
the outcomes can be horrific.. on december 6, 1989, a lone gunman gunned down fourteen women at a montreal college.
Yes I think I can. When were all in 'the truth' and 'true believers' we were brainwashed. This may have lead to mental illness in some cases but not in others. Brainwashing and mental illness are similar, may overlap, and one may lead to the other. I don't think they're one and the same.
To further explain: consider someone attending a hypnotist show. The person is picked from the crowd and the hypnotist has him believing he's a dog.
The person is brainwashed. But is he mentally ill?

You might be confusing mental illness with brainwashing.

'It does seem to me that entire communities do become mentally ill, however.' - please provide evidence supporting this statement.
I'm not sure how change will come about. I have read about acts of kindness from moderate sunnis in the Syria/Iraq conflict. Some kind people helped escaped yazidi slaves by hiding them away from ISIS, helping them reach their relatives in Kurdistan or Turkey.
Some activists in Ar-Raqqa are documenting human rights abuses but I'd imagine their life expectancy is about the same as an icecube in an oven.

@jgnat
Which mental disorder were the men who stoned the Syrian woman to death (see my post no. 184) suffering from?

I've just finished reading about a Syrian women, accused of adultary, who was stoned to death.
Apparently her own father helped tie her up and threw the last rock, killing her.
Were all the men involved in this atrocity mentally ill?
i have just finished reading one of the most powerful, thought-provoking books i have ever read.. if somebody really wanted to know the reality of life inside the watchtower they must talk to a rational ex-jw.
only people like us can see through the offical statememets and stereotypes and understand the thinking, pressures, hopes and fears of life in the cult.. ayaan hirsi ali shares her personal experience of growing up in a muslim community.
ayaan was born in somalia with it's culture of clan loyalty and honour.
'The fatwa was left impaled into the body of Theo van Gogh' - the religion of peace strikes again.
'She is very disappointed by western liberal feminists and accuses them of racism' - I think I get where she's coming from.
Western feminists seem to hold white, 1st-world sexist pigs to a much higher standard than they hold swarthy, 3rd-world sexist pigs. I'll have to finish watching the vid.

Thanks for this recommendation, cofty. I haven't read any of Hirsi Ali's books but having heard her speak she comes across as very intelligent and articulate. I'll buy 'Infidel' when I have the time.
Can you confirm that she has been living with the threat of death (therefore she has a guard or hotline to the police) continuously since 2004? Have I got that right?
after a one year sucessful fade and no longer associated with any congreation, i was visiting my sister this week (who goes to the meeting to please her husband for now; i am slowly planting seeds though) and they decided to year this weeks midweek meeting via the telephone.
since i was a guest in her house, i sat with them in the living room to hear the meeting.
to my surprise (especially growing up as a gay jw with still alot of anger in my heart over how i was treated), the talks 2 and 3 where on, of course, homosexualiy.
@Truthexplorer - you seem to equate homosexuality with immorality. Supposing a gay couple remain chaste throughout their courtship and only have a sexual relationship within marriage.
How do you feel about this?

Flipper: 'My JW mom who is now 87 [accepts gay people]'
Fantastic! It's taken me most of my adult life to accept gay people for who they are, and treat them as equals.
You're never too old to learn.
