he got jailed for 20+ years - but will he serve the full sentence (22 years, I believe) or will he be free to terrorise society in 10 or 11 years' time?
UK prison sentences need to be toughened up, IMO.

by Frazzled UBM ini didn't find this particularly surprising given jw indoctrination is all about how evil the non-believers are (and how deserving they are to be destroyed during the big a) and how the wbts is absolutely right and everyone else is absolutely wrong - so it is not a big jump to islamic fanaticism.

Good point, Frazzled.
The only difference between the two seems to be that JWs are eagerly waiting for God to destroy the "wicked", whereas Islamists are eagerly destroying the "wicked" for God.
I think that both groups are extremists, in their own way.

by yogosans14 inthese verses in particular were an eye opener for me.
of course in the jws i thought only 144,000 are truly born again and are part of the new covenant but the bible says else wise.
i know most here will disagree with me but try to have a open mind here :).

I'm afraid I might not be much help - I don't know if there is a god.
What I will say is: talk things through with your parents. Listen to them, they have more life experience than you do.
Also, try to live a 'good life'.
Take school seriously and find out what subjects interest you. Listen to your teachers and work hard.
Don't worry too much over the existence of hell.

The Anglican Church is what you are advocating - I'm not advocating this. My comments in this thread have said that a reformed xtian culture isn't so bad an idea. This is not religious denomination or worship. The UK would still be secular. Religion (not what I'm advocating!) would be a personal thing limited to places of worship and private homes. Freedom of (and from) religion would still exist.
Like it or not, the UK does have a background of Christian culture.
I mentioned Douglas Murray, a gay man who is also an atheist (having no religion). He self-identifies as culturally Christian. Why are you having so much trouble grasping this?!

However, is it possible for a country to be both secular and culturally Christian?
It should be possible - Douglas Murray, the neo-conservative journalist and critic of Islam, identifies himself as a culturally Christian atheist.

Just one minor point: if you have similar discussions in future I don't think you should tear up WTS literature and throw it away. Pretend to be interested in what they've handed you - the less likely you're regarded as apostate, the more your message will stick, IMO.

Drugs and Alcohol Ruin Your Life
by campaign of hate inthis point was raised in another thread vaguely, and wanted to try and expand on it.. the wt has said (and rightly so in my opinion) "that excessive use of drugs and alcohol can ruin your life".
in my eyes this is a fact.. this is where it starts to get a little suspicious, as they also say (or subtly hint at) "that if you leave the wt you will becoming addicted to drugs and alcohol and will ruin your life".. its almost like a self fulfilling prophecy.
as there are a lot who leave the borg and they do start drinking heavy or smoking, or taking drugs...or whatever.. the wt capitalizes on the fact that people want more freedom, and they subtly ingrain the thought that.

@campaign of hate, they threaten teenagers thinking of leaving in a similar manner - 'if you leave, you'll become addicted to X, or you'll sleep around and get STD/unwanted pregnancy, or get in trouble with the law or ... etc.'
As you've pointed out, it can become a self-fulfilling prophecy, especially to teenagers.
It's almost as if the WTS wants leavers to fail so that they return to the religion.

Do JW Children Still Call Adults "Aunt" and "Uncle"?
by cofty inwhen i was young we were taught to refer to other adult jws as aunt or uncle.. was this also the case in other countries and does it still happen?.
was it just a custom or has the literature ever commented on it?.

Like you, cofty, when I was young and in the untruth I was told to refer to adult JWs as uncle and aunt. It obviously has to do with the belief that we're all related to each other via Adam & Eve.
I don't remember ever reading about youngsters referring to adult JWs as uncle or aunt in the literature.
