  .....it would appear that the republic of ireland (not the uk) is responsible under eu law for the setting up of a hard border with its non-eu neighbour, northern ireland.

  just as spain had to do with ceuta in morocco.. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ceuta_border_fence.

  a 310 mile border would cost a helluva lot to build and to cover with security.

  Just to add, people sometimes talk about the reunification of Ireland and Scottish independence as 'breaking up the UK' - not true.

  I don't mind if N. Ireland and Scotland leave the UK - the UK will continue to exist, and the remaining members (England, Wales, Isle of Man, Falklands, etc.) will continue to get the benefits.

  You take issue with the Oxford Research Encyclopedia? - in this instance, yes.

  It's clearly biased in favour of immigrants (legal and illegal).

  Every time an illegal immigrant enters a country illegally they're committing a crime. Someone needs to point this out to these twats at Oxford.

  Research has shown that immigrants (including undocumented) have a positive effect upon reducing crime rates - obviously not counting the crimes that illegal immigrants commit every time they enter a country illegally. lol

  Also, there must be many unsolved crimes committed by illegals because illegals aren't on the radar.

  FWIW, I think Trump should mind what he says and how he says things from now on.

  It may have been refreshing to some people when he was taking on the political establishment in 2016 but these are tumultuous times for the US in 2019.

  And it would makes sense politically for Trump, too. If Trump is now more careful in his speech, he will totally outflank his political opponents. Cortez & co. will be talking about concentration camps and anyone who wants border controls is a Nazi, Trump will sound sane in comparison.

  Nor does he have to. This is why the POTUS has to be especially measured in the things he says.

  For example, when the POTUS made the stupid comments about Charlottesville, white supremacy groups were fawning and salivating over his comments - does this apply to Democrats, too?

  Alex Cortez has repeatedly said US immigration detention centers are concentration camps. Last month some nut tried to firebomb an ICE building and was shot dead. She has also apparently said that marginalized communities have no choice but to riot.

  Does Cortez need to watch her language, too?

  Or is it a case of double standards?

  I think it's just as well to point out that Trump condemned the shootings as cowardly and said he stands with the people who live in that particular town.

  One of the shooters was killed by police, the other is in custody and will likely face the death penalty.

  are we about to experience very dire problems regarding male/female toilets?.

  the reason i ask this question is that a very good friend (catholic, not jw) has just returned from ny and told me that he saw a public toilet which said the toilets were gender neutral and if you felt more female but you were a guy, then use the female loo, and vice versa for women who felt like a guy.

  is this going to give free licence to pervs/voyeurs?

  To center on one group, transgenders, as being the only ones of those who would conceal their appearance too prey on people, as being the majority of those types of predators, is setting yourself and those you love up for a bad surprise - you've made a mistake, there, Blondie. The same mistake people on FB made about me.

  I don't think transgender people are any more likely to be sex offenders than cisgender people.

  My concern is that rapists, sex offenders - cis or trans, doesn't matter - might take advantage of a situation that allows trans-women (biological males) into the ladies' restrooms.

  As it stands, as long as a person born male says he's a woman, he can use the ladies' restroom. Such a person doesn't even need to have an operation to remove the offending penis and testes. He can be a pre-op trans-woman.

  Now, that's what I'm concerned about. An opportunist rapist who's really cis could claim to be a pre-op trans-woman.

  Women who share these kinda concerns mustn't be dismissed as irrational. They're being perfectly rational, actually.
