I remember in the 90's when I joined JW and it is already being said to avoid college degree. I knew some families who strictly never allowed their children to go to college. After a while, when it was clarified that it is a personal decision to do so, these families started sending their children to college. A few years ago, during school for congregation elders session, it was again emphasized that if you send your children to college, you will be disqualified as elder. A number of elders in our circuit started to question the policy, I did not openly question it but I already made my decision to step down as elder when time comes that my only daughter would go to college. I thinkk there were still a lot more with the same dilemma. A fellow elder wanted to do the same as I did, he's still gathering enough strenght I guess

Higher Education and Disqualification for Privileges in the Congregation
by 00DAD inwhen i was still serving as an elder in the late summer of 2006 in a congregation of jws in socal we received a letter from the "christian congregation of jehovah's witnesses" (read: the governing body) directing that anyone pursuing a higher education would be disqualified from privileges of service: elder, servant, pioneer, etc.
i remember this quite distinctly because i had just received by ba in education in june a few months before this.
in 2002, i had decided to pursue a degree under the society's then current "it's a personal decision" policy and was quite shocked at their drastic policy change.

I served as an elder in a local congregation in Asia, until last month when I have to give up my privilege as my daughter wanted to go to college to earn a degree. I couldn't deny her the opportunity as I myself finished a higher degree.
There are a lot of those with privilege with this dilemma. It would take a lot of guts to decide whether to follow the directive or your conscience on this issue. I followed my conscience....
