i must be a glutton for punnishment or something, but here i go again, broaching the subject of speaking english in america.. apparently a law was recently passed in austria that people must satisfactorily pass a basic german language skills test in a few months or they will be fined.

if they do not master basic german in 4 years, they can be kicked out of the country.

many people interviewed in the article mentioned that they are too poor to afford the classes.

LDH, what's the problem? The problem is that half the jobs I look for in the paper, that I am highly qualified for, say "must speak Spanish." The problem is that I have to repeat myself three or four times when going thru the drive thru or making a transaction at the bank or reserving a hotel room and my requests are still mishandled because the people in customer service don't understand the language. The problem is that I have no way to tell the landscaping guy not to spray weed killer this week because my girlfriend's daughter is going to be playing slip and slide on the lawn with her friends from out of town. If you don't consider those, and many others, problems than good for you. I guess I feel that I shouln't have to communicate using only hand jestures when I'm in my own neighborhood.

Voltaire, I said "broaching the subject of speaking English in America" and "redirect the funds to pay for free English classes." And even if I hadn't specified English in my post, I would hope that people would have enough brain power to realize what I'm saying, you dolt.

ThiChi, what would be the difference? Do you think one group should and the other shouldn't have to learn the language? I'm curious.

ThiChi, I'm not sure. I just read the article in someone's post on another board. After looking closer at the article, it appears that the law has not yet been passed, it's just in the process and has some significan backing. Here is the link that was posted with the article. I haven't checked it out yet.

Apparently a law was recently passed in Austria that people must satisfactorily pass a basic German language skills test in a few months or they will be fined. If they do not master basic German in 4 years, they can be kicked out of the country. Many people interviewed in the article mentioned that they are too poor to afford the classes. While I like the idea of the law being implimented in the US, it is simply not fair to the poor people who can't afford the classes. Then I had an idea. All that money that the Federal, State, County, and City Governments are spending on making street signs, voting ballots, DMV tests and a million other things multi-lingual could redirect the funds to pay for free English classes for the poor people who can't afford them. That way all US citizens could communicate with each other and people wouldn't end up being deported just cause they're poor. Just a thought.

Let the flaming begin, I've got my asbestos suit zipped up.

Well, sounds like we all agree about Shawn at least. Scary to think about the fact that he's a teacher.

Shimmer, just want to let you know where I'm coming from on the Gina thing. Aside from agreeing with everything Hunter said, we didn't hear too much from her untill Hunter got the boot. Immediatly you could see her attitude kick into high gear. She began saying how stupid the rest of the tribe was for doing that. The first thing out of her mouth to her new tribe-mates when the switch happened was a description of how wonderful Hunter was and how wrong and disgusting it was that the others had sent him packing. I have heard her mention the Hunter thing a lot more than the lazy thing. And she became vocal about the lazy issue when the work-a-holic nag came over. She was bonding with the old lady by talking about lazy people, that's all. To me, the whole picture taken together paints a vindictive, grudge-holding, jelous girlfriend. Perhaps there are things I have missed and that you have picked up on that would make me see things clearer. And in answer to you final question; I would be the second-hardest working person in the group, that way I would not stick out as the "first, most, hardest" of anything and I would protect myself from anyone saying that I don't work enough. However, I would not bitch constantly that others are not working hard enough.

Warning: The following is a strongly stated opinion. It is not a personal attack on anyone on this board. Please to not read this if you are over-sensitive and likely to start flaming if you disagree with the stated opinion.

Gina - Insecure and pissed off from the beginning because she thinks of her self as good looking and got put in a group with someone who looked even better. Her self esteem was kept in tact only because the hunk liked her. The rest of the group takes out Hunter and now she's all alone with people who don't like her holier-than-thou attidude and pay more attention to Sara. Self image is at a low. The tribes switch and she gets put with an old nagging hag and loves it. She never forgets her old tribe members who didn't like her and wishes ill will on them even though they have no longer got anything to do with her. Why? Because she's a vindictive bitch. I hope she gets the boot before she can piss me off too much more.

Rob - Funny as hell. Probably not as smart as he makes himself out to be, but definatly smarter than anyone on the island realizes. Is playing the game every minute, but is subtle about it. He may seem goofy at times and friendly at others but you never know what he's realy thinking about a person or what he's planning. Smart to get rid of Hunter. Shawn is unlikeable and Hunter was his main competition in the original Miraamu. With Hunter gone, Gina is isolated and soon to leave, Sara is his to controll, Shawn is going to open his mout one too many times eventually making him easy to vote out, and he will come out on top. But the tribes switch. Currently in a bad spot but for the sake of continued laughs and brutal honesty in front of the camera I hope he gets out of it.

Shawn - Thinks he's living in 1770. *NEWS FLASH!! Slavery is over!* Thinks everyone who is not black is racist agianst them. Has no people skills. Doesn't know when to shut his mouth. Lazy. Confrontaional. His only use is as a vote that Rob can count as in his pocket.

Tweetie, love the pic. The costumes in that movie kicked some serious ass. Anyway, Gabe was voted off because he was dumb as a post. That possibly-gay-paranoid-cook who got everybody to vote Gabe off was doing that because Gabe wouldn't commit to an aliance. In this game that's what it's all about. Mr. paranoid decided to say "If you're not with me, you're against me" and went for the jugular. After that, the only hope Gabe had was to ally himself with the old Miraamu members. And I think that old Miraamu tried to make that happen. If you listened to what the New Yorker (Rob?) said when he was finishing up his conversation with Gabe, it sure sounded to me like Rob had tried to get him to commit and Gabe fed him the same line, "I'm not here to play the game bla bla bla." So the old Mirramu had no choice but to vote with Mr. Paranoid in order not to bring his wrath down on them. On the other hand, had Gabe said to Rob and Mr. Black-Guy-With-A-Persecution-Complex (Shawn?) that he was in with them, power would have swung the other way. As it stands now, old Mirramu is in a heap of trouble. And another thing.... Did you hear Hunter's girlfriend, the only original Miriaamu left in that tribe? What a vindictive BITCH! She said "I hope Rotu looses and that one of the old Miriaamu is voted off tonight." Talk about holding a grudge. I think she should be required to wear a burka for the rest of the show, bitch.

the recent thread on pokemon reminded me of a talk i heard once years ago.

The recent thread on Pokemon reminded me of a talk I heard once years ago. An then-brother was giving a talk on being rightous. He recounted the tale of speaking with an older brother when the Star Wars movie first came out (episode 4, not the new ones). The speaker had asked the older brother if he had seen Star Wars yet. The older brother replied "Star Wars, I don't see any movie with the word 'war' in the title." At this point the speaker paused to let this little bit of guilt seep into everyone in the audience. I remember he had this little smirk on his face. He must of felt so holier-than-thou at making the whole congregation realize that they weren't as good of a JW as they thought they were. And the whole congregation soaked it right up with a few nods and murmers of agreement. I wonder, which tactic do you think that the WTBTS uses more to keep it's flock from leaving the fold? The feeling of self-guilt, or feeling of holier-than-thou. I think it's a pretty even mixture of both.
