But what about the some of us idea... what happened to your tough neighborhoods? Did everyone decide on going to the shooting range Sunday mornings instead of worship? Since that might be a friendly sport as well according to some people.

As a gun owner, yes it is...as for the crime figures, they have gone down...as for the neighborhood, I just teach in a tough one.

Self defence classes are way more expensive and would hardly ever be used in safer countries, plus it is not even the best way to defend, only the last way.

Self defense classes aren't just for fighting. They're a way to teach pysical self discipline and can instill confidence, if you are so inclined. And, yeah, I'd like to have as many ways to protect myself as possible.

I never said it was not a bad way to test your skills, but most gamers know that there will always be someone better than you.

But you questioned the time you put into it, as if learning a new skill or perfecting your art at something (be it chess, football, debating or wrestling) was a waste of time. People take pride in the skills they've mastered, and justly so...they put a lot of effort and time into it. I don't win everytime I play CounterStrike, but it's a blast to play, win or lose.

My point is: sports and action and board games may seem like a waste of time, and they well may be, but the enjoyment you get out of them, if it tickles your fancy, is well worth it. Competition is probably the healthiest and most human activity we can engage in.

To gather the entire high school for football spirit day in order to get pumped up or a person taking drugs to improve performance might not be the best Christian attitude.

So, your take is that you shouldn't be enthusiastic about playing in a game? That there's something wrong with getting "pumped up" for a game? As for the drugs, that's not exactly a common occurence as you may think, as tough as testing is.

That was the idea I wanted to convey so it can have implications for the other sports available. It would be better to stay away from areas that have high cases of violence instead of spending so much time perfecting a self defence move.

It is true that conditions are getting worse and worse, most Bible students agree on that.

...not us...crime has gone DOWN for the past decade...

Even if you have many moves perfected, all it takes these days is a gun or a gang of people to destroy your chance of defending yourself.

...so just give up any hope of defending yourself?

So it would depend on the persons well being and attitude to not have pressure into developing ones body just to defend against this wicked world we all live in. And in order to stay fine tuned, it requires the person to keep at it which I find to be a brutal challenge.

...Ever think it might not just be for a violent end? that it may be a way of keeping in shape?

Many sports have progressive stages like chess, the black belts would be the same as being a red player in chess. Is it worth all that time?

If you love it, it is...Some people have hobbies and interests as a way of testing and improving ourselves.

Some people are very fit but they can still have a heart attack. It is good to find balance in all you do since the Bible promises a better life in the future.

Balance...the old fall back of the hard-liner...

Because I've met people much like you, Xena, who I share something with. I view many on the board as a circle of friends, and I like to share my thoughts, experiences and hopes with them. Or just to chat. And, I haven't given up on finding a Mrs. Badger here somewheres...

Most I've met on the board are great people. I've registered and dropped off a lot of boards in my day, but the ones I stay with I find I enjoy the posters and people as individuals, not just text from a random source.

I like you guys...that's why I stayed.

i was at university the other night in the computer lab, cruising this site, well a fellow classmate who has been in my class since sept and we have become friends, walks past, looks at the site i am on and says, "i noticed you are on a jw site, did you know i am a jw, are you one?".

i was shocked.
