I'll come look at this tomorrow night. Have to work in the morning and give my weary self some much needed rest. It's been a long day. I have noted many times on this forum that people use the logic that if there was a god, god would solve hunger, fix everything. God doesn't, so further proof there isn't a god. I don't find it answering the god question. I see people making choices that affect each other and our environment. Then there is nature. Man has some effect on nature. Nature affects nature and man. Scientists don't know all the answers, the non believers and believers among them. Religion sure doesn't have all of the answers. I can agree with you, Cofty that some believers can say some pretty puzzling things after a disaster. An example would be blaming the wild life in New Orleans for the Katrina disaster. That kind of thing sickens me.

Oh yes, you call it the dumbest comment, but you know it true. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that if you live in a dangerous area, your odds of getting in the way of danger go up exponentially.

This thread is exclusvely about natural evil over which humans have no control
Natural evil. So a tsunami is natural evil. Doesn't that personify the tsunami? Human beings do have control over living on islands and coastlines. I was raised on the gulf of Mexico, the coast. We knew there was risk of hurricanes, but we chose to live there. The earth is full of powerful weather conditions and moving plates, etc. Would you live near an active volcano? Volcanos prove there is not a god?

Don't tell me there is lessons for my compassion in this! Bullshit!.
Maybe it's not about lessons. Maybe man should consider not living so close to coast. We don't believe this life is all there is. I'm not a Chrisitan, but I do not believe this life here is all there is. I'd more think of this earth as a pergatorial experience, really, kind of hell on earth, with a lot of good thrown in as well. I don't know all of the answers. I'm fine with not knowing all of the answers as to why there is suffering. I know it doesn't make sense to blame God for the bad that happens and it really makes little sense to decide he doesn't exist, because of things like the tsunami. There are some messed up things that happen here: welcome to planet earth and humankind.

If the God of the Bible can make Manna, there should never be a hungry child ever.
But all you hear from Christians about their God-Jesus are excuses for why he does nothing to prevent suffering.
Christian, non Christian, pagan or whatever, most of the suffering by human beings on earth has to do with other human beings, particularly the free will of other human beings. Who voted for Hitler and put him into power? Human beings. Somewhere along the line, you have to place responsibility for a lot of the woes we suffer, squarely on the shoulders of human beings. We see how decisions man has made have affected our weather in the greenhouse effect. This is too complex to go blaming God everytime something sad or terrible happens, or to use it as evidence that there isn't a god.
Don't get me started on GMOs and chemical and germ warfare, in addition to weapons. Human beings are the ones who are mismanaging resources.

It's nearly early morning here. I'll do that with facebook, but I am headed for bed soon. I'm having a cup of tea first. I've been up late two nights in a row, upset about my broken down car and the sub zero fahrenheit weather we are having.

There are papers and lectures that notice the same things, Kate. I'll have to ask my friend Michael who is a clinical psychologist in practice and teaches classes at the college level, psychology and abnormal psychology. One night, after a class we attended, I told him how many atheists behave so much like evangelists and fundamentalists. He had just seen a lecture on the same subject or maybe read the transcript. I'll have to ask him about it and share the link to any info about it with you. Most atheists I know do not behave that way. Most of them just live their lives and atheism doesn't come up unless the occasion calls for it. It is really odd though, when it happens.
