  I tried signing up yesturday. I set up an account but it would not let me use my password or username after activating it. I changed password, started again. Several failed tries-it said my account was locked or disabled. I was disgusted.

  I went directly to medicaid. Tried to get online application. It failed- said it crashed. I gave up.

  May try again another time for medicaid. But I can make no co-pays. What money I have left now goes to food!

  Fact Finder, you will now go through your local department of human services. healthcare.gov would have directed you to do the same. Do not give up. Having health insurance can not only save your health and life, it can keep you out of the bankruptcy courts. Be sure to collect all of the documents they want you to have and be persistent .

  If you are not working, you will be eligible for food assistance, too, as long as you are under $5,000 in assets, not including your home if you own yours. If you have too many assets, then educate yourself about your local food banks. Food banks often have cleaning supplies, shampoo, toilet paper, razors, etc.

  If you are unemployed, your state will have help for you in job hunting. Where I live we have Michigan Works. They help with resume writing, they have workshops to show you how to dress, how to interview and computer access if you don't have it at home. They have a talent bank where you post your resume'. You can look for jobs on the talent bank and employers can look for you.

  Some states also offer help with funds for job training and technical school.

  I am unemployed and cannot afford ANY health care- I can make no payments at all. I have no taxes to pay as I have no income, so tax credits are useless to me.

  Obamacare is a joke.

  Here's some good news for you and it is not a joke, Fact Finder. New Jersey has expanded medicaid. Since you are unemployed, you can sign up for medicaid. In New Jersey it is probably going to cost you little to nothing. Did you sign on to the healthcare.gov website and go through the signing up process? They had to tell you that New Jersey would cover you with Medicaid. There is no deadline to sign up for expanded medicaid and they cannot hold your assets against you.

  Doctors fees are so expensive because of student loans and malpractice insurance.

  The government should do something about that to lower the fees.

  It isn't just the doctors fees. There are hospitals, too. Heatlh care was allowed to become big business. Profit is the goal. You are the commodity. It isn't just the doctors getting filthy, stinkin' rich off this, not that all of the doctors are.

  Read the book. The entire book. It's a place to begin to understand how health care costs have risen to impossible heights. After that, continue to educate yourself. Everyone should understand what has happened.

  No one said there is anything inherently wrong with big business. There are a lot of different types of big business groups. In this particular case we are speaking of health care insurance and the health care industry and those who've turned them into big business. You asked why it costs so much in the first place. Read that book. It was written well before the ACA came to be, by two investigative reporters.

  This thread topic is for the purpose of spreading the word about healthcare sign up deadline, which is tomorrow. If you've never been into many thousands of dollars worth of medical debt, or had had to choose between your health and literally having a roof over your head, then you may not understand why it is vital, in the truest sense of the word, for every citizen to have access to affordable health care. This should not be about huge profits for greedy people, but rather for the health and well being of every citizen. It is individual citizens who make up our nation. We are the building blocks of our society. If we truly want a strong country, we have to value the mental and physical health of every single person.

  MeanMM, I don't think you asked me that for the reason of not knowing the answer.

  Tomorrow is the 31st. It is the last day to find out for yourselves, what you can do in your unique situations, with heathcare.gov

  You will have to wait for the next sign up, which will be for next year, if you don't get signed up tomorrow. Medical bills can cause you to go bankrupt. Lack of insurance might put you at a choice between dying and catastrophic debt, someday. I've lost more than one person who did not seek medical care in time, due to lack of insurance and not wanting to spend thousands on medical bills.

  Sorry, End of Mysteries but I respectfully disagree. People need to look at their own situation on healthcare.gov and make their own decisions. I signed up and for the first time in 11 years, I have health insurance. My grandson who lives with me has it, too. You should tell us more. Before ACA, with a pre-existing condition that was serious, individuals were paying in the $1,000, and often more, range for very little coverage.

  I agree that UHC is the way to go, but given how uneducated and ready to screw themselves Americans seem determined to be, we won't get there anytime soon.

  Too many people haven't even looked into it at the official site. They take all the negative propaganda hook, line and sinker. Rush could shake their hands, smile at them, steal their wallets and leave them smiling, thinking they just had a brush with greatness.

  Tomorrow is the last day. Be sure to look into whether your state is one that has expanded medicaid as well.

  factfinder, what state do you live in?

  barrold, what do you mean, personally, when you say middle class? Are you speaking about a single person or a family? What incomes.

  I am disappointed that Barack didn't hold out for the government option. I can say that the aca is at least a beginning, a foot in the door to health care reform. I am just glad someone got it started. It sure wasn't working the way it was.
