Wikipaedia: A Royal Commission is a major ad-hoc formal public inquiry into a defined issue in some monarchies. They have been held in the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and Saudi Arabia. A Royal Commission is similar in function to a Commission of Enquiry (or Inquiry) found in other countries such as Ireland, South Africa, and Hong Kong. -

This is going to sound really weird, but back in the 50's there was a belief among many in witness-land that same-sex sex didn't count as fornication and therefore was not a disfellowshipping offence. It was ranked alongside masturbation. My guess is that messrs Greenlees and Chitty were of this opinion. It wasn't until our CO came visiting and was informed that a number of young ladies in our congo were into lesbian stuff ( someone had grassed) that the shit hit the fan. The next DA featured lots of talks on what was OK and what wasn't. Most stuff wasn't OK. -

Back in my witness early 20's, a number of us young bloods from the local congo would sell a cleaning device from door to door to supplement our income. It was a simple handle with a sort of bulldog clip on the end into which one could fasten a brush or duster or sponge. A local brother would make them and sell them to us for 50 pence each. We would then sell them marked up 100% for £1 each. Sell ten a day and we'd made a fiver. WooHoo!
Then we had a new young very holy bro move in who wanted to be part of our little sales team. He immediately chastised us for girl-watching. Then he objected to us only working until we'd sold our ten a day, insisting that we should work all day no matter how well we did. Then he said we were being extortionate in our prices and that we should only go for a 50% mark up. So we told him to go work on his own.
And then he told us - he had got the calling, he was of the remnant! So yeah, that all fitted right in..

How Far Apart Were Your Legs?
by Joe Grundy inseveral threads on here about the excellent bbc r4 programme this week ('the report') focussing on rape and abuse in barry, south wales, jws.
fat pervert mark sewell later got 14 years and i hope he is enjoying every minute of it.. the courageous ladies who spoke on the programme were articulate, reasonable and made a tremendous impression.. the quote in the thread title made an impression on me, and i hope, on all listeners.. forget religious, theological, 'biblical' issues and cut to the basics.
a rape victim was asked to demonstrate - to demonstrate, ffs - to three unqualified (middle-aged at least, presumably) men just how far her legs were apart when she was raped.. i have rarely heard anything so outrageous, and i used to investigate rape and abuse in my profession.

The elders themselves had a licence to abuse. Some of these guys really get off on questioning anyone who's been involved in sexual activity, forced or otherwise. -

I guess all those original remnant 1950's members that I recall must have died off by now. Which means, according to WT doctrine, that all present "genuine" remnant must have received their calling because those other members have fallen away.
And yes, the point about the Memorial now being meaningless is well made.

Back in the 50's, when I was just a skinny kid, my father became PO of a new congregation. He'd only been baptised for around 4 years, so his rise was quite remarkable.
Just one of his flock in the new cachement area was of the "remnant". This lady was well into her 60's, childless but married. Her name was Alice. She was a pleasant soul on the surface and called everyone "Ducky" - including my father.
At the time, persons of the remnant were held in very high regard indeed. Their numbers were diminishing fast and they were highly valued.
My father would consult Alice on a weekly basis concerning all aspects of his congregation's affairs. Her husband was well used to visits from PO's, CO's and DO's and would busy himself making tea and coffee when they called. Sometimes, when my father received a visit from one his flock who was experiencing a crisis, he would declare "I need to go and see Alice", and off to Alice he'd go. Alice would advise him on no end of congregational affairs and personal matters, and in the main, she seemed to be quite a wise old owl.
Once, Alice told my father that the spirit in the congregation was being restricted by immorality - fix it Ducky! Regrettably, the culprit was a 14 year-old girl who had her misdoings read out to the entire congregation and even now as a 70 year-old woman, is still deeply affected by the experience. Not so good!
On another occasion we had a joint assembly with a neighbouring circuit. Alice was seen talking animatedly with several other elderly people whom she had just met. She claimed to be able to recognise fellow remnant members and they claimed the same.
So now, I wonder what ever happened to the high esteem in which these people were once held?
It seems to be that the WT has implied that anyone claiming to be of this group is most likely mentally ill.
And yet, they were once regarded as being the creme de la creme of Watchtower land.
How times change!
