Landy: So the copyright law only applies if we agree with the organistion the copyright belongs to? If we don't agree with them or don't like them then all bets are off?
Yup. It's like learning how to not take shit from a bully. Sandbox rules.
now what is your stance?

Oubilette: Have you never heard of civil disobedience?
Yes. I agree.
I see it more of an act violating the WTS' secrecy "rules" than a violation of copyright laws.
Copyright laws are there to protect creativity. For example, a telephone book isn't protected. No creativity there. And facts aren't protected. Oh shit...I just realized something. The WTS is one of the most creative entities out there!
Eh...regardless. Civil disobedience against authority structures and the instutionalized structures such as the WTS is built into our democratic process. Each and every individual is viewed on the same legal status as a corporation. The democratic process is supposed to put us on a level playing field but it rarely does.
*to add: if the OP were true, and it was revealed that the WTS had bought the rights and tried to eliminate or alter the book, I would be copying it like crazy and flooding the world with it. But...that is not the case here...

problemaddict2: I don't know if we are both out of the loop, or if that is something not really known.
Yeah. I guess it is you and me trying to look behind the curtain instead of at those pointing fingers at each other. The blame for this fiasco is largely the responsibilty of the one(s) who were offering the book behind both Ray's and Cynthia's back. And now, Deborah is trying to correct that wrong.
I find a certain irony in how Ray's authorship has created such controversy. Poor fellow - he emerged from an environment where all voice is taken away from individuals and given to a corporation. It was Knorr who eliminated "authorship" for the WTS writers. And now, Ray broke free and put his name on his voice and his voice is seen as belonging to anyone who decides it is in their best interest to do so. Putting name on voice is ownership - that rests with the individual as opposed to the corporation. Ray chose to own his voice and he also chose who it was that would caretake that ownership after he passed on.
And that is why I believe that plundering and using WTS material is, like others have said (Oubliette), an act of resistance to oppression by abusive power. Stealing Rays' voice cannot be compared to that act.
Deborah tries to protect and stand up for all the rights that go along with sticking your name on what you have to say. And the people who oppose the WTS for altering and changing their voice all the time are quibbling over Ray's book.
Ironic.

So...I am real curious about something.
Deborah mentions that there was someone(s) who had committed a copyright infringement while Cynthia was still alive - the one who was selling through Amazon. This is the person(s) I am interested in.
Who is the person who fucked this all up to begin with by undercutting Cynthia's income with bootlegged copies? the one who had to be tracked down and served with a "cease and desist"?
Most people seemd to be focused on recent events and certain already named people...but who is that first person(s) who infringed on the copyright?
Or is that secret? Or does everybody else know and I am just out of the loop?

Sorry for sidetracking your post into the Trans Siberian instead of the rail line you posted.
I would take the rail trip in the video too! I love train travel and I love isolated expanses of snow.
Yes, St. Petersburg is definitely on my list of where I would like to visit. I have a stack of photos that were given to me by someone who visited Russia a few years back. I am so intrigued by the photos because they depict scenes and such that are not seen on websites or in the popular photos of Russia.
Maybe someday I will get my wish to visit Russia. Maybe. I would be okay with the slower and older railway, though. More time to savour that immense land.
Or, maybe I will just wait for that superhighway to be built.

At a recent meeting of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the head of Russian Railways, Vladimir Yakunin, put forth a bold plan for a massive trans-Siberian highway.
This superhighway project, called the Trans-Eurasian Belt Development, includes a major roadway to be built alongside the existing Trans-Siberian Railway. And alongside that, the plans include expansive energy infrastructure involving another railway, oil and gas pipelines, as well as electricity and water supply facilities.

Thanks for posting this, fulltimestudent.
My dream trip of all time is to take the Trans Siberian Railway from Manchuria to Moscow.
Ah...I likely will never get the opportunity but one can dream.

StarTrekAngel: Wow... they seem more interested on protecting someone else;s copy rights, than the countless lives this book can save.
That is a red herring.
Thousands (myself included) exited the Borg long before this book was ever published. And long before the WWW made it easy to copy and pirate material.
There are many, many resources available that "save lives". To put this book in the category of "must have or die" is being unrealistic and it is only an excuse.
Please, do not insult the intelligence and hard work of those who lives were "saved" by other authors and resources.
And yes...the protection of the copyright is critical. The copyright isn't just there to protect profit - it exists to protect the integrity of the work in question. Not just the integrity of the author - but also to protect those words from being altered or omitted or added to.
A copyright ensures genuineness. It is not just about monetary value - it is about the integral value of originality.

From the link that defenderoftruth provided:
But now the Jehovah’s Witnesses are reaping those benefits on their way out the door without giving back to the neighborhood that fueled its fortunes.
And that sums up everything vile about the WTS and the JWs that I have such a lack of respect for.
Taking and not giving back - such self centered myopic behaviour. So typical of everything they do, even in their personal lives. That top down mentality is passed on and is often expressed by a lot (not all) of the r&f themselves.
Greedy bastards.

... embarrassing and makes the exjw community look like idiots...
You are absolutely right about that. I have been so disappointed in the idiots who refuse to acknowledge that there are laws that exist and with their refusal to acknowledge those laws.
I have dealt with my frustration and disappointment by (rightly or wrongly) attributing it to their upbringing inside a cult that does the exact same thing. Ignores the law just for their own selfish gain. And, the lack of comprehension of some people who claim that they read Deborah's message is astounding.
It truly is embarassing to be an observer of these levels of ignorance. But...I keep hoping that the cult cloak will drop at sometime for those people.
This IS the world - it is the way it operates. We are no longer captive to those cultic self-centered thoughts if we so chose to educate ourselves.

jookbeard: I've never heard in all my life a book being taken out of print ...
So...right here is the basic problem. People just don't comprehend what it is that they read.
The book was NOT "taken out of print". It wasn't in print. The copyright violations stood in the way of it being put back into print.
