And...as far as "harm" goes...well, geez, I guess ya shouldn't have put it in print in the first place, huh? -

Damn. No. I do not believe that the WTS has protection under the copyright laws.
Their publications don't stand the sniff test.
Firstly, their indoctrination propaganda is "freely" distributed to the public.
Secondly, so are the elder's manuals and letters, etc. A select group of "the public", but the public, nonetheless.
Thirdly, an underlying principle that is part of the establishment of the copyright laws is such that the protection of ownership of "creative material" would stimulate more creative projects/endeavours. That is one of the primary purposes of copyright.
Fourthly, the publication of "fact" is not creative.
Fifthly, the ARC was not blocked from publishing the material to the public.
The WTS material doesn't meet the standard on any of what copyright law requires or is intended to protect.
The WTS is trying to set their own rules and call it "copyright law protection" when in reality, they are dealing with security breaches within their own organization. That's all. That kind of information - secret corportae stuff - is supposed to be kept secure if they don't want people to get their hands on it. That is why it is "secret". They can't legally protect it any other way.

I still think of it as a security breach rather than a copyright violation. I would argue that if I ever faced a judge on the matter.
The "secret" WTS material is a publication of "facts", and I am not convinced that a "creative license" applies to it.

Simon: It would still be breaking copyright law to pirate copies of the WTS secret elders manual..
Again...I question if it is illegal to "pirate" the elders' manual.
Is not the elders' manual readily available for public download on the ARC site? And no restrictions on its distribution?
And many other WTS documents and publications as well? Ones that the WTS try to hold hostage and secret under their "copyright" rights?
I don't think that redistributing WTS published material is "pirating". Not at all.

TD: One of the more common reasons the Pay Attention publication proliferates illegally...
I would even question if it actually is illegal to distribute that publication. It was not produced for economic gain, it was just restricted in its distribution.
Distributing this "free" book is only increasing its exposure, not threatening its genuineness or hurting the WTS in a real, economic way. Distributing their material does not really violate copyright laws.
All that sharing the WTS material does, is allow everybody to see what they already distribute - secretly.
Sort of like getting your hands on the kind of WTS material that the ARC subpoenaed. And gave to the public, like it should be.

Heh...isn't there something in the bibble book about this? How you have to use the "tools of the Master's house" to tear down the Master's house?
That is how I view the appropriation of the drivel that spews forth from the Tower. Tools for dismantling.

Landy: So the copyright law only applies if we agree with the organistion the copyright belongs to? If we don't agree with them or don't like them then all bets are off?
Yup. It's like learning how to not take shit from a bully. Sandbox rules.

Oubilette: Have you never heard of civil disobedience?
Yes. I agree.
I see it more of an act violating the WTS' secrecy "rules" than a violation of copyright laws.
Copyright laws are there to protect creativity. For example, a telephone book isn't protected. No creativity there. And facts aren't protected. Oh shit...I just realized something. The WTS is one of the most creative entities out there!
Eh...regardless. Civil disobedience against authority structures and the instutionalized structures such as the WTS is built into our democratic process. Each and every individual is viewed on the same legal status as a corporation. The democratic process is supposed to put us on a level playing field but it rarely does.
*to add: if the OP were true, and it was revealed that the WTS had bought the rights and tried to eliminate or alter the book, I would be copying it like crazy and flooding the world with it. But...that is not the case here...

problemaddict2: I don't know if we are both out of the loop, or if that is something not really known.
Yeah. I guess it is you and me trying to look behind the curtain instead of at those pointing fingers at each other. The blame for this fiasco is largely the responsibilty of the one(s) who were offering the book behind both Ray's and Cynthia's back. And now, Deborah is trying to correct that wrong.
I find a certain irony in how Ray's authorship has created such controversy. Poor fellow - he emerged from an environment where all voice is taken away from individuals and given to a corporation. It was Knorr who eliminated "authorship" for the WTS writers. And now, Ray broke free and put his name on his voice and his voice is seen as belonging to anyone who decides it is in their best interest to do so. Putting name on voice is ownership - that rests with the individual as opposed to the corporation. Ray chose to own his voice and he also chose who it was that would caretake that ownership after he passed on.
And that is why I believe that plundering and using WTS material is, like others have said (Oubliette), an act of resistance to oppression by abusive power. Stealing Rays' voice cannot be compared to that act.
Deborah tries to protect and stand up for all the rights that go along with sticking your name on what you have to say. And the people who oppose the WTS for altering and changing their voice all the time are quibbling over Ray's book.
Ironic.

So...I am real curious about something.
Deborah mentions that there was someone(s) who had committed a copyright infringement while Cynthia was still alive - the one who was selling through Amazon. This is the person(s) I am interested in.
Who is the person who fucked this all up to begin with by undercutting Cynthia's income with bootlegged copies? the one who had to be tracked down and served with a "cease and desist"?
Most people seemd to be focused on recent events and certain already named people...but who is that first person(s) who infringed on the copyright?
Or is that secret? Or does everybody else know and I am just out of the loop?
