Do you remember this WT calendar art?

That is a blast from the past, Coco. I totally forgot about that calendar but I can see it now...hanging on the kitchen wall...

It puzzled me a lot back then.

The adoption of the term "elder" was puzzling to me. I exited in the pre-elder days. It was so strange to hear my sister say "elder" in the mid to late 70s(?) because I grew up with the mantra that "elder is a term in used by those churches of False Christendom. JWs aren't a part of this world...we don't use "elder" ".

I visited my elderly mother a few years back. She would slip into the 30s and 40s terms of "our bethren" when she was speaking of the "brothers from Bethel".

Abstract This study was an evaluation of the literacy programme conducted by Jehovah‟s Witnesses (JWs) in the selected congregations in Chongwe district in Zambia. The aim of the study was to establish whether the literacy programme conducted by JWs was achieving its aims and objectives. It also looked at the methods and materials the facilitators used when teaching in order to meet the goals of the literacy programme. Furthermore, it has established the literacy level of the learners before they were exposed to the literacy classes.The research design used in the study was the qualitative approach. Data was collected using lesson observation, interviews, miscue test and document review techniques. The population of the study included all the graduates from the congregations visited. The purposeful and snowball sampling procedures were used to select the sites and the participants. Data was collected from four congregations and the sample of the study consisted of forty graduates of the literacy programme of JWs. The main findings of this study were that the graduates of the literacy programme conducted by JWs were able to read the bible and any other literature in Cinyanja. Lack of pens and exercise books may be a contributing factor to low writing skills among the graduates of this programme as they seemed to be doing more reading than writing. The literacy providers require training so that they are exposed to effective adult literacy teaching methods. The syllabic technique the facilitators used was found to be very effective as many learners were able to break through to literacy. Lack of furniture and designated classroom may have been a problem. However, this can be challenged as there are a lot of schools operating without furniture and some, like learners from community schools learn to read and write under a tree. (See literature review)One of the main recommendations of this study is for the Government to recognize the initiative made by church organizations like JW in the fight against illiteracy and support them even by giving them small grants or train the facilitators.

It is interesting to note that the Kingdom Hall, in the Zambian congregation that the author studied, was financed in the usual way - with a loan from the WT. And then, the WT supplied them with basic literacy aids but it was up to the congregation to sustain those supplies and purchase anything additional that they needed. As well, the JW 'teachers' were not adequately trained.

since most people are not aware on how to get (free*) access to scientific papers and journals, so here's a short list of resources.. search http://scholar.google.com for the paper.

maybe you'll get lucky and find it somewhere for free.. if you can only find a paid for version of the paper, get the title, doi (sort of like an isbn number) and link to the download page of the paper on the paysite.. if you don't know the doi, find it by searching your paper's title on http://crossref.org.

go to the libgen site (links here: https://sites.google.com/site/themetalibrary/library-genesis ) and search for the paper.

I use Sci-Hub a lot but I run into a wall with some articles. I appreciate the other avenues you and others have offered.

millie: So that is the main point then. It is a real estate decision masquerading as a translating enterprise.

It is possible that there is an additional benefit to the translation offices.

Hand in hand with translation is literacy programming. And literacy efforts by charities are wedges that establish legitimacy in foreign countries. Another side benefit of literacy and translation efforts if that it will qualify nonprofit organizations for governmental support in the form of grants, etc.

In Africa, for example, the JWs are petitioning the government for financial aid to support the JW literacy programs (the WTS doesn't supply them with anything but bare start up materials). I read a Master's thesis written by a JW that did just that - it was mainly a petition for the government to pay for training of the JWs and to kick in for supplies. (*I will look for this paper...it is somewhere in my archive)

Another recent global initiative has been language revitalization and the WTS has jumped on the bandwagon in that endeavor. It keeps them in good standing with government relations and gives them ease of passage in certain areas.

The translation business is a vital area of activity outside of the WTS and the WTS is an active participant in global initiatives.

DD: If it was up to me as the GB, to save face and give the impression that I cared about religious freedom, I would restrict him to Cart Witnessing...

And there ya go...the real reason for cart witnessing. The JWs have been trolling the prison system for years, converting criminals, baptizing them and taking them under their wing and the WT has foreseen the problems this will cause. Or probably have already been dealing with it for years

Not to mention the 'new' criminals that get churned out of their WT machine...no wonder some of those carts get a lot of use

They are. The more a person knows, the more the world falls into place. I need some time to absorb what you just posted...have to resurrect some old knowledge files stuck back in my brain somewhere...and fit that in.

I am reminded of an interview that I watched that had been done with Simone Beauvior. She described her journey to being a non-believer in God and how she had rejected certain ideas about God, explored new ideas, all the while expanding her knowledge of the world around her, and finally "I realized one day, when I was 14 or 15, that I no longer believed. I had refined God so much that he was no longer relevant to the world"

I wish I knew more than I do about it - the subject fascinates me. The way you have described it, confirms that cancer has, indeed, always been with us. Have I understood that right?

COLORADO SPRINGS -66 year old Waymon Ivery is re-living a nightmare that happened more than two decades ago

“I Had no idea ...no clue as to the effect that it would have."
Sitting in the KOAA studio conference room,he admitted his regret.
Ivery is regretful for his actions, and effects it would have on his then 9-year old stepdaughter that he was convicted of molesting in Milwaukee Wisconsin in 1992.
His case came back to the forefront after a man named Roman Vargas approached Ivery with a video camera and surprised him with a question to a crime he had served nearly a year for, after being sentenced for 10 years.
But just hours after the video began to make the rounds on YouTube , Ivery was living what he thought was ancient history.
Commenters on social media websites began to make their opinion public. One person wrote: “...this cult's days are numbered.?" Another wrote “JW’s and child protection issues just don't seem to mix well. What is the matter with them.”
And that’s exactly why we posed the question to the religious group.
Several calls and emails were made to the world headquarters of Jehovah’s Witness in New York...They went unanswered. We also tried to contact several elders within the group locally. They initially said they would contact us back with more information. But that never happened.
So we went in search of answers directly from the people who go door to door...
We found them knocking on the doors of Lazy Lane Circle in northeast Colorado Springs.
They were not too happy to see us, and told us that we should follow the instructions on their website. They slammed the mini van’s door on our camera’s.
