i remember about 5 years ago reading on another site about subliminal images in wt literature.

i honestly thought it a load of bs until i checked out one glaringly obvious image of a creepy skull in clouds within the knowledge book.

i was shocked and even showed my wife at the time who thought it was creepy.. so my question is why?

CoCo: ...mistakes in the non-colorized drawings in Life Everlasting in Freedom of the Sons of God. One was the incompletely rendered railing of the podium where a beardless Jesus was addressing the Jews.

I checked that image out, CoCo. I don't think it is an error.

I don't 'read' it is a railing. It is an arm rest for the bench. The podium is half-circled by benches and you can see a corresponding arm rest where there are no steps.

Another, a little girl playing with a huge, maned lion in Paradise. The head was outsize, the body diminutive.

Maybe that image is in a different book? The Truth book? I couldn't find that image in the Life book...went through it three times.

Here are some statistics that could be one of the reasons behind the divisiveness of this topic.

1 out of 12 males are colorblind. 1 out of 200 female are colorblind.

There are 7 different kinds of color blindness.

One out of 12 men cannot see color 'normally'.

So, when guys come on here and adamantly swear, up and down, that there are NO subliminals in the image, I agree with them. They likely can't see them. They don't have the physical apparatus to do so. Their eyes don't see color normally

It isn't that images aren't there. They truly cannot see them.

Most women can. 199 women out of 200 have normal vision

doubtful: ... I have to say I don't think they wear expensive suits. Italian suits are a little foible of mine and I'm very familiar with them. Most of the suits I've seen on the GB (the ones where you can see close enough to see the fabric anyway) seem to be cheep fabrics and ill-fitting

Doubtful, did you watch Jackson's ARC testimony? I thought that Jackson's suit looked pretty good and fit him well in spite of his portly figure. Was his suit a cheap knockoff or was he wearing something more substantial? Do you think he invested in an expensive suit for his worldly appearance?

And yeah, Morris' suit doesn't fit well at all

Finkelstein, what is warped about that image is that the WTS published a 'religious' image that contains a rendering of a woman that is sexually suggestive.

The mind of the viewer is being warped by an image that resembles a porn image of a woman with her eyes closed, mouth open...pleasurably about to ~~bite the fruit~~ engage in oral sex.

Oral sex is not warped behavior. It is normal, healthy sex. It is not warped to make the association between a woman with her eyes closed, her mouth open, and a look of pleasure on her face while the snake looms closer, with oral sex. That is a normal association, not a warped one.

What is warped is that this image appears in a supposedly "moral" publication.

Ah, a valid point? What is the point?

dropoff: I personally knew a Bethelite in the art department, and he complained/commented that there were some good artists there, by the time their drawings were resized and converted to print, much of their work was lost.

The "point" that dropoff made was that the original art is sometimes not the same as the printed art.

Dropoff's conclusion: "I think it likely that some of the 'faces' or whatever were not in the originals but were a result of the conversion to print."

That is true. To a small degree. Detail can easily be lost in printing translation if the artist did not take into consideration the next step of the printing process.

However, what that observation does - that the final print was different than the original - is draw attention to the fact that there are steps that occur after the original image is presented that leave prime opportunities for intervention into the image.

Valid point? Yes - it is a point that highlights how easy it would be for an image to be manipulated at some stage in the printing process. It might let the unsuspecting artist who labored over their image off the hook, but it certainly doesn't let off anyone else involved in that image production.

Okay. Lets' address those "other causative probabilities".

Let's examine how probable your explanation is.

Misplaced printing. No. Highly unlikely. The WTS has always bragged about their "state of the art" printing equipment. They have also bragged about the quality of paper used and have even went so far as to have their own paper developed. To increase the quality of printed color images.

Misplaced printing? No. Not from a printing department that prides itself on perfection.

Amateur/novice printers? Hmmmm...not according to the stories I have read from those who worked in the printing part of the WT enterprise. Some who work in the printing departments received their training from professional printers. Heck...the WTS is a worldwide publishing and printing company. That is professional, not novice.

Amateur or novice artists? Again, no. Not at all. The images are slick and done in a professional manner. Not novice. Amateur maybe in the sense that the artist themselves don't get paid...but someone doe$.

CC: I've certainly learned a great deal, although this subject has long been near to heart and hand.

Me too. It was one of the reasons why I chose the field of study that I did. I seriously wanted to know everything I could about art - to know why those WT images were burned inside my brain at such an early age. So I went to university and studied art making. And now I know why.

And now I can do it too - make subliminal images so that my images can be burned in somebody's brain. And I can also recognize the device when I see it in other images. I know how to deconstruct images and reconstruct them - I have learned the language of art.

I am going to go off on a soliloquy here...damnit...talking about art gets me keyboard happy.

Something that begs an answer is "why"? Why would subliminal images be inserted into WT literature? What is the purpose?

I think it can be explained quite simply. The purpose is to engage and hold the viewer. That simply. The primary objective of producing art is to engage the viewer and the longer you can engage the viewer, the more successful the art work is. Art is communication - it is a language - and the longer that a viewer engages, the more impact the message will have. The more the image will be remembered.

So, why use images connoting sex or death? Because of the contrast - the impact is there but not looked for - the intrigue of what holds a person becomes what the primary message is about, all the while the subliminal images are what is holding the viewer. Sex and death are two of humanity's 'big' themes - both will evoke strong emotions.

And the viewer stays engaged. And they remember the image. Because they were engaged. In what they thought was the primary message. And that is what they remember. The primary message. And that message is enhanced because the viewer was "taken captive" by images just floating beneath their consciousness.

Compound Complex posted a painting that he done that contained "subliminal" images (I missed whether you did the subliminals on purpose or not, CC) so I will post one of mine.

In this painting (4 feet wide by 5 feet high), I deliberately inserted subliminal images. And, there are images that appear that I did not do intentionally. Both are effective at engaging the viewer for a longer period of time than if they weren't there. Most likely, it will be impossible to tell which I did on purpose and which were happy accidents. If you can see them at all. Not every one will be able to, or see the same things

Aw, Finkel...that is disappointing.

Your statement sounds like the standard "artists are crazy" line. Or, "artists are irrational and not capable of rational thought".

You just slammed all my professional artist friends with your statement. And me. All the people who are educated, trained and practicing artists. You placed no value whatsoever on who and what they/me are.

*but I still like ya...I just don't like the way that you dismissed valid artists
