JW remark about blood transfusion

recent i had a conversation with an old jw friend.

he told me his mother rejected a blood transfusion in a critical fase, and survived it, and of course it's good to hear that she makes it good now.. what me triggered, was a remark he made about what the elder of the hospital committee told him.. this elder praised the mother of my old friend because of rejecting the transfusion.

the elder told them that most jehovah's witness in the netherlands take a blood transfusion when their life is at stake.

The irony is animal blood to the rescue. The only reason they saved her was connections,her husband is hospital liaison

I have read about this case in medical literature.

You bring up some critical points about the case.

First, we only ever hear about the successes. We don't hear about the ones for whom the procedure/product failed.

Another irony is that the product used in this case, Hemopure, was only available because it was still used for military research in the USA. The trials for this product have already been stopped by the FDA. Available only to....JWs for "compassionate use". And funded by the US defense department...to develop protocols and products for trauma response.

And about the animal blood...there are documented cases where the HLC arranged for JW patients to receive the other artificial blood that was on the market - Polyheme - made from human blood.

And, like you pointed out, this woman was only able to receive Hemopure because of her connections being married to a HLC bigshot. This product would not be available to just any lowly JW. As much as the JWs believe that "oh...we can have artificial blood now! and bloodless surgery!!!"...I say, good luck with that. You better have some serious money and good connections to access it.

in recent years significant progress has been made in solving the question of how life originated on our planet.. how do you think theists will respond when it finally happens?

as a former christian i know my reaction would have been something like "well that just goes to show that it takes intelligent life to make life", but for two reasons that defense doesn't work.. firstly it would prove that life is not an ethereal force that originates with god.

there is no 'ghost in the machine', no elan vital.

Well, it looks like I have the title of this thread wrong. My copy is exactly the same as this one and from the information given...it is likely the full volume including adults, minors and pediatrics.

The handbook has sure grown since the time it was first compiled. This is the 2001 version of 10 volumes:

If you all look at the letter that Trost wrote. It says it is a NEW edition ...and has a few more articles that deal with minors & adults.

Ah, yes, I see that.

It is too bad that Trost's letter isn't dated.

The volume likely went through a few additions and slight revisions during those early days of production. After all - it was being photocopied and bound individually to begin with. And, revised as need arose - the adult version would have come later - many technological surgical advances were done on the pediatric population first and then later implemented into adult care

*edit to add - I will have to take some time to go through the volume you have scanned and see if there are any additions to the hard copy of the book I have

For sure. "Alternatives to blood transfusions" is a misnomer. The alternatives were/are blood transfusions - transfusions of a patient's own blood. Their blood is/was drained and/or salvaged...and then transfused back into them.

That is one of the reasons why the supposed risk factors of blood transfusions that the WT has promoted about the dangers of blood transfusions is misleading - all the mechanical problems associated with transfusion of blood is still existent in the alternative procedures proposed in surgical practice - the alternative is still a blood transfusion.

Without blood transfusion technology in the first place, there would be no supposed alternatives.

Credit goes to Kim for taking the time to scan this book. That was a lot of work - over 600 pages now archived and accessible. Valuable.

And much thanks to James Penton for updating his third edition of Apocalypse Delayed to include background on how this book came about. When I first came across a hard copy of this volume 5 years ago, there was no information about what the book was or how it came about. The book does not contain ownership information or copyright clearances. Thank you to James Penton for explaining why that is. (I knew he would know! Lol! I had speculated that Penton had been around the Canadian Bethel at the time it was compiled. The update is much appreciated and now I am waiting to read Penton's 3rd edition of Apocalypse Delayed - I have it on order - excited to see what else Penton has added)

Dr. Kevorkian endorses the WTS Child Sacrifice doctrine

As a result of the "hospital work", three books containing photocopied articles from medical journals and the popular press were produced and bound at the society's Toronto branch. These were Jehovah's Witnesses - Alternatives to Blood Transfusions in Adults, Jehovah's Witnesses - Alternatives to Blood Transfusions in Minors, Jehovah's Witnesses - Alternatives to Blood Transfusions. Most of the material in them was compiled by Alex Tost, a former Watchtower missionary and chemist from Hamilton, Ontario. Interestingly, in preparing these books, no attention was paid to copyright laws.

Penton mentions that the book contains medical studies and clippings from popular press but it also contains legal writings by Glen How and it contains a section of clippings from WT literature supporting the JWs' choice to refuse blood transfusions.

This is the book that was used by the JWs who were negotiating with doctors and hospitals in the 70s. The book carried a lot of weight - the introduction contained a veiled threat that legal problems would arise if the JW patient's wishes (the WT wishes) weren't adhered to, and that threat was backed up by the weight of Glen How's legal articles contained in the volume.

I am grateful to the person(s) who took the time to make one of these volumes available as a digital file, along with a letter by Alex Tost outlining the use of the books. This volume that has been digitized is the pediatrics version.

so to all involved, i understand it was a surprise to see the story in print.

The irony is not lost on me - the Jehovah's Witnesses are credited with shaping the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms - and now they are getting challenged under that same charter. Ironic and historically significant...I think this case has the potential to shift power significantly in favor of individual rights.
