the way that the wt conducts business in russia, hiding ownership of property and moving money overseas, was a large factor in the jws falling afoul of the russian authorities.
it wasn't just 'extremist' views that came into play, it was also their handling of money that was illegal.. this article is from a russian news source - i had to use google translate to read it, so i have copied and pasted the whole article (i usually don't...apologies to the author of the article).

It appears as though Russian JWs are loyal to instructions from the org. As per the letter that wifi had linked to earlier in this thread...the Kingdom Hall in Novoshahtinsk was re-registered on March 31, 2017 to an individual.
The WTS has hidden the ownership of the Kingdom Hall property. And a certain JW in Novoshahtinsk now 'owns' the property. Just as instructed by the WTS.
Whew....got that one in right under the wire...March 31. Just in time!

* to add -
The person named on the property ownership will now likely be the one to have problems with authorities. This is such a set-up. The JW who is taking responsibility for owning 'extremist' property will have to take the heat and the org will get mileage from going around claiming persecution! persecution! look at what 'they' are doing to our brothers in Russia! Yeah...well those JW brothers aren't standing up for their faith - they are being asked to protect the WTS property. "Standing up for your faith" in WT speak means protecting the WTS assets.
The brother assigned to be the User of property, must possess the necessary spiritual qualities, and humbly support the decisions of councils of elders and are willing to cooperate with them. If necessary, a brother has to be ready to give documentation of paramount importance. The brother assigned by the User of property should be prepared, if necessary, bravely to defend the legitimate interests of the congregation, and not be afraid of meeting with government officials (police, prosecutors, regulatory authorities).

in russia, the persecution of jehovah’s witnesses begins all over again.
giles fraser.
Anony Mous: ...the Russians, given it's history with religion sides on the side of banning (they have anti-religious laws due to the Czar, like the Germans have anti-Nazi laws due to Hitler).
Actually, no.
The Tsar did not pass anti-religious laws. In fact, it was Tsar Nicholas II who passed Russia's first freedom of religion laws back in 1905. He passed an Edict of Toleration on April 30, 1905, giving legal status to religions not of the Russian Orthodox faith. Which allowed other orthodox faiths (like the Old Believers, who had been persecuted for over 200 years in Russia), and other religions, the right to own property.
Who was responsible for the anti-religious laws in Russia were the Soviets.

Londo: Taxing the organization into dissolution is.
Lol! I would think that seizing all WT property in Russia is a pretty big tax.

there are 8000 filipino jehovah's witnesses in russia?
zeb: Filipino people are the big 'export' of the Philippines nation. Thousands work in foreign countries and send money home to family.
Of course.
But what I don't get is why are there so many Filipino JWs are in Russia? When it appears like they make up a large portion of Filipino OFWs there? Or are they in Russia under travel visas rather than work visas?
Why 8000? This article says that in November 2015, the JWs were claiming 2000 JW Filipinos in Russia. So 6000 more Filipino JWs went there in just over a year??
Overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Russia have expressed sadness and disgust when the Russian Federation blocked the website which serves as their source of comfort and encouragement away from home.
For many years, many OFWs in Russia, who are mostly housekeepers, have been downloading books, magazines and videos from jw.org, the official website of Jehovah’s Witnesses (JWs), because they tackle issues close to their hearts—family, relationships, health and spirituality.
Since the website is available in more than 700 languages, some 2,000 Filipinos working in Russia can read and listen to their favorite Bible verses and Bible-based literature in their mother tongue, their spiritual food.

Pinoy Jehovah’s Witnesses in Russia face deportation
Philippine Daily Inquirer / 05:40 AM February 24, 2017
BAGUIO CITY—Jehovah’s Witnesses (JW) in the Philippines have asked the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) to intercede on behalf of Filipinos who face arrest or deportation in Russia for belonging to their faith.
The Watchtower Bible and Tract Society of the Philippines, the legal and corporate arm of JW, made the appeal when it met DFA officials this week on behalf of more than 8,000 Filipino Jehovah’s Witnesses in Russia.
There are 8000 Filipino Jehovah's Witnesses in Russia? Does that mean that almost 5% of the JWs in Russia are likely there as domestic/construction workers? I wonder who they are working for? Other JWs?
The number of 8000 seems high. According to this article, as of December 2016, there were some 4000 OFW in Russia working in construction, household service and hotel industries. What are 8000 Filipino JWs doing in Russia??

Yes, Wifi, those are the letters that caused the org so much trouble in the Russian court.
You will note that the letters are dated in February - instructing the local congregations to hold onto the donations and "later, we will inform you what to do...", and the Administrative Center was inspected on March 15. They held funds in anticipation of being shut down.
It's only ever been about the money with WT. Every decision they make, every revelation of nu-lite boils down to $$$.
Uh-oh
Somebody's in trouble ...
Wow. The JW religion just looks worse and worse, although we should not be surprised.
The WTS, God's chosen trumpet of truth, can never, ever do anything honestly, can they? It is always about skirting the law, pushing the law, and defying the law.
I think the WTS/GB wor$hip the god of $$$$. That is why their faces are all shiny - it is the reflection of gold. $$$ in their eyes.
TD: The "myth" is that there is always time for a court order. I would agree that there are many transfusion scenarios where that is the case, but certainly not all.
You are right. Absolutely not all.
All you have to do is go to google scholar and type in "pediatric Jehovah's Witness no blood transfusion" and you will find out that LOTS of JW children undergo procedures without the use of blood. Instead, they are subjected to "alternative" procedures - sometimes quite ghastly ones.
The WTS has actively pursued that pediatric population - ever since back in the early 70's when "interested JWs" published their first volume of "Alternative Procedures" - directed at pediatric care of JW children.
Do all JW children get blood if they need it? Of course they don't. Especially if the "smart"/spiritual/rich JWs take them to "bloodless" centers where the "cooperative doctors" that have been recruited by the WT's HLC squad practice their brand of medicine. Those children will never get an opportunity for the court to intervene. The doctors will never apply for an order - neither them or the rest of the JW nursing staff and bloodless coordinators (usually JWs) that swell the ranks of those kind of medical treatment centers.

The directive from the US: "Jehovah's Witnesses" operate in Russia illegally
April 21, 2017 20:57 Alexander Buzaladze
Lay low, to work illegally and smuggle billions of dollars in assets overseas. This secret directive came to Russia from the headquarters of "Jehovah's Witnesses" in the United States. On the eve of the Supreme Court admitted the sect of extremist organization and banned it in our country. Untold riches belonging to leaders of the sect, shall be confiscated.
Judging by the number of cars in front of the Moscow kingdom hall "Jehovah's Witnesses" - takes place in some kind of meeting or service.
We wanted to record the interview on the first day after the close of a religious organization, but we were not allowed inside the premises.
"Incitement to religious hatred, publication of specific literature that demonstrates not only that our religion is true, but a demonstration of the negative traits of other religions - the destruction of its moral and ideological" - so explained to ban the activities of "Jehovah's Witnesses" in the territory of the Russian religious scholar Larisa Astakhov.
Nearly 9 million believers worldwide. Sermons are conducted in 240 countries. Profit on one product only typographic extremist - billions.
"In every country where" Jehovah's Witnesses "offer to develop normally, we get about half a percent of the population belonging to this organization we have it in this case, approximately 700-800 thousand people." - said Astakhov.
In each city, Russia, in every major regional and district centers have Jehovist parish. Toptuny preachers, they also tax collector, foxes scratching at the door catch on the outside of potential victims.
Now that the extremist sect recognized - from the Brooklyn headquarters of the US secret distribution list has come to Russia.
"To us came into possession of such documents, which show that the" Jehovah's Witnesses "very actively trying to renew properties to foreign physical entities - the same" Witnesses ", only representing other states" - said Alexander Korelov, religious , chairman of the legal center of the Russian Association of centers for the study of religion and sects.
In short, almost 300 properties across the country, business assets, apartments, secret wards, vehicles - all this seems to be reissued and somewhere to cross.
"In fact, religion is there, as everywhere is on the second to the third plane Basically all the same, it is money and political influence in the country where they reside." - says Korelov.
Petersburger Sergei Ozerov for many weeks for the first time included in his apartment. Adopted son rewrote the apartment in favor of the "Jehovah's Witnesses".
"It is to this sect, come to him of its members, then they are going to constantly" - outraged the lake.
He does not understand how this could happen, but it can not do anything - documents and dedicatory already decorated. Son helped some clever lawyers.
According to Ozerov, they were from Brooklyn. The sect's son Sergei persuaded to give all that is, including flat - in fact all the same will soon end.
While in the situation dealt with the investigators, Sergei Ozerov live nowhere. I hope that the apartment be returned - almost none. For "Jehovah's Witnesses" is worth a serious law firm and money. And this is not an isolated case in the country.
Now, to save assets acquired by Jehovah's Witnesses seek moves increasingly black.
While we were trying to find another entrance to the Kingdom Hall, and found okolosektantskih "reshalschikov" - they are now and scurry. Seeing us, people in expensive shoes, and with the voice of the preacher decided to retire.
"Thank you, I do not like to communicate -. Why, tell me -? Well, I have already answered - What are you, have gone into hiding - No, I'm going on the ground -. Do you believe -? Good luck."
According to experts, a sect banned from Russia as just will not go away - at Jehovist ideologues in this case developed a very specific plan - lay low and work underground.
