Have we become what we despise so much?
by Tenacious inthe majority of members who tend to join this forum have been hurt possibly even traumatized sometimes to the point of wanting to end their lives.
upon joining the forum, new members are welcomed with open arms, welcome messages start pouring in, "likes" are freely given, a false sense of security is promoted where a member is free to speak his mind without having to worry about the wt gestapo.
again, similar to how potential converts are welcomed and "love bombed" upon entering a kh for the first time.

My view : how i'm happy now to be able to say "I disagree" without to enter in a hurricane of talks with elders... -

Lurkers: A truth is either true, or it isn't. There is no in between.
by cappytan intruth is absolute.
there is no such thing as 2=1 or 1=2.. if one starts out with the equation 2=1, one has already failed.. truth = truth.
you cannot change whether something is truth or not.. when the organization teaches one thing as a truth (ex.

If YOU had to make the decision, would you respect a JW relatives wish to refuse a blood transfusion?
by nicolaou ina few years after i quit the meetings my mum needed her medical directive signed and witnessed and she asked if i'd do it.
i was surprised to say the least!.

[one of the first things I did while exiting was tear up that bloody card.]
LOL!
My mother never understood that. "I understand you don't care no more about religion all that". But the card, why? You want to die of AIDS ?
In the same time, I chosen to fade during the trial if the infected blood scandal.. wrong timing... not by purpose

Yes! Absolutely yes!
I always respect the choices of my relatives even if I disagree. I want my choices to be respected, then...
Of course, before, until the last moment, I will boring it like a crazy to make it change his mind, but at the fatidic moment, I will respect his choice, even if I totally disgree!

Where to draw the line: how Platonism haunts our discourse and the search for exorcism
by slimboyfat inin the discussion about race i adopted a position i am not entirely comfortable with.
i think there is a sense in which it is useful to distinguish categories of description that can be fruitfully defended (apples and bananas) and those that cannot (caucasian or other racial descriptions for example).
but there is a more fundamental sense in which i believe that everything is socially constructed, every single line you can think of.

So what we are describing with these "facts" is not the world in itself but how we've chosen to construct it in communities of meaning. It could be otherwise.
The description of the world is not the world, like a picture of me is not me.
This is a funny semiotic game who made at this time the happyness of Magritte.
But where do we go concretely and pragmatically by saying that, yes, things are how they are, but with another scheme, in another paradigm, they would have been different ? It's stating the obvious!
But why not ? Anyway changing of paradigm to explain and understand the reality don't have any influence of the reality. The earth will still have the same form, independantly of the naming of this form!

Because if someone show me a draw of a paradise and ask me if I want to live there, I think my first reaction will be to look at him strange...
